Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa 'on the way to becoming a multimillionaire' thanks to his huge TV role - despite ratings drop

Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa is reportedly on his way to becoming a multimillionaire thanks to his huge role as the time lord.

The actor, 31, made his debut in the BBC sci-fi series earlier this year and though things might not be too peachy amid a drop in ratings, his bank balance is certainly flourishing.

Ncuti has apparently seen his earnings double to £1.9million, according to The Sun, adding to the cash he'd already raked in from former roles including his part in Netflix teen comedy Sex Education. 

The publication reports that the Rwandan-Scottish TV star paid himself a handsome wage of £700,000 from the money earned through his through his company Gemini Moon.

A source told The Sun: 'Landing one of the most sought-after roles on TV was always going to help Ncuti’s career and earning power.

'That much is clear from his latest accounts. But some might be wondering if his financial success has been matched by his success as the Time Lord.'

The insider continued: 'The number of people tuning in for a show that revelled in being a shared experience for all the family is somewhat underwhelming, to say the least.'

MailOnline has contacted representatives of Ncuti for comment. 

Ncuti made his first appearance as the famous time-traveller back in May, with the first two episodes - which premiered on iPlayer ahead of the BBC One broadcast - attracting 2.7million and 3.2million.

However, a week later, the viewing figures rapidly fell to 2.3million.

Despite a slight boost to 3million viewers in later episodes, the rest of the fourteenth series saw around 2.3million people tuning in.

A BBC spokesperson told The Sun: 'Overnight ratings no longer provide an accurate picture of all those who watch drama in an on demand world.

'This season of Doctor Who premiered on iPlayer nearly 24 hours before broadcast, and episode one has already been viewed by over 6million viewers and continues to grow.'

It comes after Doctor Who fans were left in a frenzy in June as they felt disappointed by the show's grand finale reveal. 

The highly anticipated season 14 final episode titled Empire Of Death, left Whovians wanting more. 

Its grand ending, which revealed who Ruby's mother is, landed on BBC iPlayer at midnight on Saturday 22 June and the episode was broadcast on BBC One at 6.40pm.

But for fans who could not wait for the big reveal, the long painstaking wait proved to be a disappointment. 

Flocking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Doctor Who fans shared their devastation of the finals as they were left asking, 'is that it?'

One user penned: 'Rubys mother reveal is probably the worst reveal I've ever seen in this show. So disapointed.'

'I'm sorry but the revelation of who Ruby's mother was, was lame'.

'Was that it?' 

'I'm now convinced the mystery surrounding Ruby and her mother was an entire plot hole they accidently created when writing this season and had no idea how to dig themselves out of it, because what on earth was that anticlimactic episode?'

'I'm sorry, but the reveal of Ruby's mother was very disappointing. I knew it would be hard to create something that lived up to the hype but that was…'

'watched the dr who finale and lowk it was so anticlimactic??? i was expecting the mother to be someone big like river song only for it to be a random person???'

Meanwhile, the show's producer Russell T Davies has said 'no decision' has been made yet for the line-up of series three. 

Appearing at Comic Con in San Diego alongside Ncuti and Millie Gibson, the screenwriter spoke about what was in store for the science fiction show. 

Russell, 62, admitted decisions about who would star in series three haven't been made yet as they are still in the middle of filming the second season.

The screenwriter said: 'We've shot season two, but that's only halfway through. We've got all those months of post to come. It's a long way off, so no decisions yet.' 

Ncuti said playing the Doctor is 'surreal' and when the host joked he had signed up for the next 10 seasons, he replied: 'Of course!'.
