Eggs recalled by one of America's biggest suppliers due to health hazard

A major egg recall has been issued over dangerous misbranding and undeclared allergens in one of the country's largest egg supplier's products. 

The liquid egg products have been voluntarily recalled by Minnesota producer Michael Foods. 

Due to a labelling mix up the company's 'Breakfast Blend Scrambled Egg' product was accidentally put into cartons labeled 'Fair Meadow Foundations Whole Eggs with Citric Acid'. 

The scrambled egg product contains milk, which does not appear on the label of the carton, the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) warned in the recall notice. 

Milk is an allergen and products containing it must be labelled as such. 

Michael Foods were alerted to an issue when a number of cartons for the whole eggs product were unaccounted for.

After an investigation the mistake was discovered and a voluntary recall was issued for around 4,620 pounds worth of liquid egg products. 

The products were sent to restaurants in Alabama, Idaho, Louisiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Ohio, South Carolina, and Utah. 

As a result the products may be in institutional and restaurant refrigerators, according to Michael Foods. 

The affected products are packaged in a 32-oz. paperboard cartons labelled and dated June 11.

Consumers worried they may have the recalled products can also identify them by checking the lot code, 4162G, and the use-by date, September 16, 2024. 

The FSIS also issued images of the cartons to help shoppers identify them. 

There have been no reports of people falling ill or having allergic reactions due to the mix up so far, according to Newsweek. 

Consumers worried that they may be experiencing health effects are encouraged to contact their healthcare providers. 

Milk is one of nine major allergens required to be listed on food labels by the Food and Drug Administration. 

If someone with an allergy accidentally ingests milk the side effects can range from hives, vomiting, and diarrhea to a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis. 

Michael Foods is the tenth largest egg company in the US with a flock of 9.8 million hens, according to Watt Poultry.
