At least one passenger has been confirmed dead and 21 were injured after a cable car crashed into another cabin before falling to the ground in Medellín, Colombia, on Wednesday morning.

The cabin was carrying 11 people when it pulled into the station in the northeastern side of Medellín and plowed into the car in front of it. The car snapped from the cable line, plunging 32 feet to the sidewalk near the platform entrance.

Jhon Londoño, a 49-year-old father-of-three, was rushed to a CES Clinic, where doctors attempted to revive him before pronouncing him dead.

'The male patient was admitted with multiple traumas, he was treated in the Emergency Department, but he died due to the severity of his injuries,' the medical facility said in a statement.

Medellín Metro director Tomás Elejalde offered his condolences to the families of the victims and said that the company would be offering them full support.

Medellín Metro, which operates the Colombian city's public cable car system, has suspended service on the line that runs between the towns of Acevedo and Santo Domingo

Police officers guard the site where a Metro Cable cable cabin fell after plunging from the popular station in Medellin, Colombia, on Wednesday morning

'The causes are a matter of investigation, what we have so far is a specific issue of a cabin that stops at the Popular Station of the descending line coming from the Santo Domingo station and that cabin is reached by the next cabin, which falls to the sidewalk,' Elejalde told Noticias RCN.

Cell phone video footage shows bystanders and paramedics tending to the injured victims as they were lying on the street pavement.

The accident left at least 200 people stuck in multiple cabins for almost two hours on the line that operates between the Medellín neighborhoods of Santo Domingo and Acevedo.

Service will remain suspended while authorities investigate the accident.

'It is the first time in the operational history of our metro that we are dealing with such a regrettable situation with passengers involved,' Elejalde said.

Estéfani Rendón, who suffered a leg injury and a fractured pelvis, was sitting in the cable car and on her way to work when it started to shake uncontrollably.

'You feel it when it collides with the other cabin and we are the ones who suffer the impact, we are the ones who fell to the ground. It's all I remember,' Rendón told Caracol Radio from her hospital bed.

Rendón said that Londoño received the brunt of the tragic crash.

'It was very shocking to see all those people around me,' she recalled. 'I saw how the man died, who was the one who received all the impact.'
