Gavin Newsom makes underhanded dig at Kamala Harris when asked about DNC nominating process

4 weeks ago 14

Gavin Newsom appeared to take a swipe at Vice President Kamala Harris' controversial path to the Democratic presidential nomination.

When asked about the selection of Harris as the nominee, the California governor joked that he was 'told to say' that it was 'a very inclusive process.'

Last month, President Biden made the bombshell announcement that he would not be seeking reelection, and he subsequently endorsed Harris.

Biden's decision lifted Harris to the top of the ticket, and over the past month, her campaign has seen a spike in fundraising and polling.

Many critics, however, say that the Democratic Party's maneuvering thwarted the will of the people, as Harris has never won a vote or a primary.

Although Harris' nomination remains controversial, Governor Newsom seemed amused by it during his appearance on Pod Save America, which was posted on Friday.

After being asked about 'the switch,' by the hosts of the podcast, Newsom laughed.

'We went through a very open process, a very inclusive process,' he seemed to joke.

'It was bottom-up. I don't know if you know that. That's what I've been told to say,' he added.

Later in the clip, Newsom chuckled that the Democrats had held a 30-minute convention between the moment Biden tweeted that he was leaving the race and the moment he tweeted that he had endorsed Harris.

'It's been amazing,' Newsom said, before pivoting and changing his tune.

'What is amazing is how unified everybody is,' he said, solemnly.

Leading figures within the Democratic party like Nancy Pelosi have claimed that the nomination wasn't rigged in Harris' favor.

On Friday, the clip of Gavin Newsom, who's thought to harbor presidential ambitions of his own, provoked the ire of people across social media.

Journalist Glenn Greenwald uploaded the clip to his X.com account and offered a brutal take on Newsom's risible demeanor.

'The Party of Democracy sits around guffawing at how anti-democratic and vote-free and secret was their process for choosing and then imposing the new Democratic presidential nominee on the country,' Greenwald said.

In the comments section, many viewers expressed their indignation at Newsom's apparent blithe attitude about the nomination process.

'I don't even have words for how disgusted I am,' one user wrote.

'This is amazing. They are actually joking about it,' someone else commented.'

'It was surreal watching a candidate accept the nomination without ever winning a primary,' another observed.

In March, Biden secured the party's nomination with little competition. After the president's abysmal debate performance in June, many Democrats called on Biden to step aside.

At the time, people speculated that Newsom could replace Biden on the presidential ticket.

In late November, the California Governor raised eyebrows when he debated Ron DeSantis, who was seeking the Republican nomination for president.

On July 21, though, hours after Biden had dropped out of the race, Newsom endorsed Harris on X.com.

In his tweet, he wrote:

'Tough. Fearless. Tenacious. With our democracy at stake and our future on the line, no one is better to prosecute the case against Donald Trump's dark vision and guide our country in a healthier direction than America’s Vice President.'

On Thursday night, Harris formally accepted the Democratic presidential nomination.
