A truck-driving stuntman was airlifted to a hospital after he crashed into a camper and ended up barreling down a nearby highway in Iowa

On Sunday, fans gathered at the Jackson County Fair's Trailer Race at the Maquoketa Speedway to watch the driver perform the planned stunt.

Footage from the race shows the daredevil going over a small ramp and through the camper as viewers cheered on.

Officials later revealed that the high-speed crash caused the risk-taker to fall unconscious and lose control of the wheel.

Without any supervision, the truck ended up going off the track, speedily down Highway 62 and striking a shed before coming to a halt.

Officials quickly took the victim to a regional hospital in Iowa City to be treated for their injuries.

The shed owner later told TV6 that he was watching TV when he suddenly heard a loud noise and rushed outside to find his hut destroyed.

He noted that it was the shed that prevented the truck from crashing further into his home and it stopped the vehicle from hitting gas line pipes.

Witness Janie Fitzpatrick later recalled how 'nerve wracking' watching the incident was.

She told TV6'I just saw some kind of flash across the road. It was just so fast you really couldn't make out what it was. I glanced to the left and noticed the fence had been taken out, to the right of me he crashed into the shed.

'It was just nerve wracking, definitely puts a scare into you.

'And it's just like the matter of 30 seconds, me stopping at a stoplight. That 30 seconds could have ended our lives, you know, so close.'

Officials have not yet clarified the extent of the victim's injuries, and their name is being withheld as an investigation continues.

The incident comes weeks after three people died as an alleged drunk driver plowed into a crowd of at least 10 in New York City.

The crash occurred in the midst of the city's Fourth of July celebrations, and among those hit were a mom and three kids, cops said.

It remains unclear if the three were among the fatalities, as at least seven others were injured by the wayward pickup.

It crashed around 9pm in the Lower East Side, roughly 20 minutes before fireworks were launched from barges on the Hudson River.

Cops said the more than two-ton Ford F-150 blew past a stop sign and that the car's driver was found to have alcohol on his breath following the fatal smash. He was taken into custody.
