I am an American mother - I think British kids go to high school FAR too early, my son is just 'too little'

An American mother living in the UK has revealed the one big issue she has with the UK's education system.

Lisa Dollan who goes by Yorkshire Peach on TikTok ventured across the Atlantic after 30 years of living in Colombus, Georgia.

Regularly documenting her family life as an American mother in Britain - as well as how much she loves the country - the parent shared the one aspect of UK life she dislikes.

Divulging that her son was on the cusp of heading to secondary school, the content creator queried why we don't have a middle school system.

'Now you guys know I agree with 99.5 per cent of things here and prefer them to American things,' she said.

'However, this - I just can't get on board and it's because my son is going to be going into high school not next year but the next.'

Her child is currently in year five, meaning in the next two years he will be walking the halls with kids up to the age of 18 - depending if the school has a sixth form.

And the American mother isn't too comfortable with that thought - at all.

She queried: 'Sorry where is middle school? He's just too little. He's just too everything.

'There must be someone who agrees with me on this. Where is middle school?'

Lisa said she believes the US education system structure is better, due to its three steps - elementary, middle and high school.

She said: 'From age eleven to age 15 you are in middle school which is a good transition for those really key years.

'Here ten and 11 year olds are thrown in with 16 years olds [and] I just can't get my head around it.'

She added: 'I think the Americans get that part right. I really do because my kids are nowhere near ready. It freaks me out.'

'I'm in the UK and we have first, middle and upper schools here. Middle is year five to year eight,' one penned.

Several others reasoned adopting America's system would be pointless due to the fact many can opt to leave mainstream education at 16.

'It’s really not that bad. Better than having to leave school three times and make friends again,' another chimed.

'[I] think everyone thinks that about going to high school it’s a scary process he will be fine,' one viewer added.

However many were in agreement with the mother's take on middle school, with some sharing their own middle school experiences.

'I went to a middle school and I completely agree that it definitely helped transition to high school and was less daunting,' a user said.

'I work in a secondary as a cover teacher and the UK really needs to adopt the middle school transition,' another said.

'Because the year seven's remain like fish out of water until they get to year nine.'
