An overrated list from a 1995 issue of GQ Magazine has left the internet in uproar after resurfacing online - sparking a bitter debate about whether the items on the run-down were truly deserving of such criticism.

The list, which features a wide variety of items, people and fads that the author deems 'overrated', was posted originally on two Subreddits - sparking thousands of comments from amused users.

Its contents, which were made in a similar vein to the New Yorker's Approval Matrix, consist of things that were popular at the time - but a little gauche.

Described by the publication as a roster of '81 people, places and things utterly unworthy of the praise and respect they'd received.'

Noting they had published their first one the year before, they added that: '12 months have gone by, and suffice to say: there's still a lot of mediocrity and outright crap out there that's getting a free ride.'

The divisive list appeared in the September 1995 issue of GQ Magazine

'But not here,' the publication sassily concluded the explanation.

While some items listed - including gender ambiguity, designer lesbianism and gay stand-up comedy - have aged badly in 2024's landscape, amused observers noted that many of them would still very much work today.

According to readers who saw the list on Reddit and X, virtual reality and righteousness about Ticketmaster would still hold up today.

'I was laughing at how f**king good it is, minus a few misses of course,' someone chuckled.

For some, the items wouldn't make sense in any decade.

'Cruise control, the large intestine, the smell of fresh cut grass?' a confused reader questioned,

Other users were simply amused by the randomness of the list.

'Ok but why were rainforests overrated?' someone questioned.

'Mangoes Did Nothing Wrong,' another argued.

'Can't believe people have been consistently complaining about Ticketmaster for almost 30 years and yet, we're still getting screwed,' one person observed.

'Lisa Maris Presley's looks' (pictured) made it onto the 1995 overrated list, as decided by GC Magazine

'Heather Locklear's galvanizing effect on Melrose Place' (Locklear pictured middle) was also listed

The list was reposted on Reddit and X, where users delighted in seeing what had aged well - and what had aged badly

According to someone else, '90 percent' of the list would still work today,.

'The prefix cyber, wood burning pizza ovens, mangos, Reggie Miller, virtual reality… gay stand up comedy!' another listed enthusiastically.

'Whoever compiled this list is having a terrible time in the 21st century,' they joked.

'Half of the list is “no duh” and the other half of the list is somewhere between aged like milk and wasn’t even a good take at the time,' agreed another, although noticed: 'It’s pretty hilarious.'

'The 90s truly was the last decade,' declared a passionate reader.

'Lol more like a list of things considered overrated in 1995 which ended up being iconic 29 years later,' another joked.

Other bizarre overrated times noted by the GQ authors was vine-ripened tomatoes, rain forests, digitized family albums, anyone dubbed 'the Sexiest Man of The Year', cruise control and mangoes.
