Man 'forced woman he met on a dating app to take abortion pills he disguised as iron after blaming pregnancy for killing his mom': Victim miscarried

A Massachusetts man has been accused of tricking his ex-girlfriend into taking abortion pills before she suffered a miscarriage.

Robert Kawada, 43, allegedly pressured the unnamed woman into taking the abortion pills over several weeks, telling her they contained iron and other vitamins.

Watertown Police said the former couple met on a dating app in January and dated until Kawada ended the relationship in early March, as reported by NBC Boston.

The alleged victim learned she was pregnant after the two broke up, according to court documents, and that's when Kawada obtained the abortion pills, including misoprostol, a prescription drug commonly used with mifepristone to end pregnancies.

At one point, he told the woman that the pregnancy had made his mother so upset that it was to blame for her death in April, per court documents.

The woman told police that Kawada, a divorced father-of-two, claimed his dad was an OB-GYN doctor as he offered her assurances when she thought his behavior was odd. 

However, on one occasion the woman saved the pills he told her to take, per police records. 

Kawada is also accused of giving her homemade cookies containing raspberry leaf - a homeopathic believed to induce labor.

He allegedly told the woman to not swallow the pills, but to hold them between her cheeks as they dissolved. He would check inside her mouth to make sure she had taken then, according to police.

The woman had concerning pain and discharge throughout her pregnancy, and Kawada would ask for updates, including from the first checkup, where the baby's heartbeat was strong.

At one meeting, Kawada allegedly told the woman she had lied about taking the pills and accused her of setting him up with the pregnancy.

At their last meeting, Kawada supposedly told the woman the pregnancy has 'in effect killed his mother,' because she had been angry about it and wanted the pair to get an abortion, which Kawada said he also wanted.

However, the woman said she wanted to keep the baby and would raise it without Kawada's support. 

Before that meeting, the woman had received a call from who she believed was a nurse from her health insurance who said she should take iron. Kawada reportedly arrived to her house shortly after the call and said he happened to have the pills she needed.

The alleged nurse then called back and said the woman should take two more of the pills, per court documents. The woman reported feeling chills and a swollen through, with Kawada allegedly saying he felt the same when he took the pills.

Police were alerted to the situation when the woman miscarried the baby that same night, on May 2, after bad cramping and bloody discharge.

When the woman tried calling the nurse, she discovered the phone was fake. She then reached out to her family who called police. 

The woman provided the pills she had saved and gave them Kawada's name and number. He was arrested on May 24.

Police say he admitted to giving the woman 'vitamin C and iron pills that I ordered off Amazon.'

According to prosecutors, Kawada's phone records revealed he had received calls from the same number as the fake nurse, and that he searched for phrases like 'misoprotol dissolved,' '9 week aborted fetus pics' and 'no reaction to misoprotol.'

He is charged with poisoning, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a pregnant person and assault and battery on a household or family member.

Kawada, who appeared teary eyed in court on Tuesday as he pleaded not guilty, is expected back in court on July 23.

His bail is set at $100,000 bail, which he’s expected to pay.

Kawada often shared photos of his two children on Facebook, writing that he had custody of them.

He wrote in December: 'Having sole custody of both kids has been difficult, but it’s also so rewarding and beautiful. Never a dull moment!'
