NBA legend Dwyane Wade has revealed he had to have a portion of his kidney removed after doctors found a cancerous tumor.

The 43-year-old, who is married to actress Gabrielle Union, said in the latest episode of his podcast that he had 40 per cent of his kidney removed in December 2023.

In the episode shared with People, Wade spoke about the 'shocking' diagnosis for the first time and admitted he had been putting off going to the doctor.

But, after his father's battle with prostate cancer, he eventually got a physical after suffering with stomach issues and cramps. He was also urinating slowly.

'On the process of checking, like, "Why is my p*** coming out slow, why is my stream ain't powerful? Why is it a little weak?', Wade explained.

He then revealed that a full-body scan found a 'cyst/tumor' on one of his kidneys and doctors told him he needed surgery.

Surgeons then removed just under half of his kidney and came to the conclusion that the tumor was cancerous.

Talking about his decision to undergo surgery, Wade said: 'I had a personal decision to make, and what it was was, "If this is cancerous, if this tumor, this cyst is cancerous, on your kidney, you’re 41 years old, you probably need surgery because it's something that needs to be removed so it doesn’t spread"'.

Wade shares son Xavier, 11, with his ex, Basketball Wives alum Aja Metoyer. He was on a break with Union when the relationship with Aja began and their child was born in 2013.

He ultimately got back together with Union and they married in 2014. Their daughter Kaavia James, 6, was born in 2018. Wade also has son Zaire, 22, and daughter Zaya, 17, with his ex-wife Siovaughn Funches, and he is also the guardian of his nephew Dahveon Morris, 21.

Wade is a three-time NBA champion after a glittering career from 2003 to 2009 with the Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers.

He also won an Olympic gold medal with the men's US national team at Beijing 2008.
