It will be their first showdown since 2020 and experts believe it could be one of the most consequential presidential debates ever.

Trump has called for both candidates to take a drug test, which Biden refused.

The former president's campaign has also accused the two moderators, who are CNN anchors, of being 'biased,' which the network has strongly dewnied.

The debate will last 90 minutes, there is no audience, and a candidate's microphone will be muted when their opponent is speaking.

More than half of all U.S, adults are expected to see or hear part of the debate through news or social media.

For both candidates, it could make or break their campaign.

The biggest case remaining is about whether Trump has immunity from prosecution.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court 'inadvertently' posted - and then quickly deleted - a decision in a monumental abortion case.

The case deals with whether emergency room doctors in Idaho, where abortion is nearly banned, can turn away pregnant patients who need the procedure.

Bloomberg first reported on a copy of a ruling that was briefly posted on the court's website before being taken down that would allow abortions to be carried out in Idaho in cases of medical emergencies.

That final decision could come down today.

In a race that Joe Biden and Donald Trump are each describing in historic terms, both are banking that tonight’s presidential debate could jolt Americans into paying more attention and tip the narrow band of swing voters who hold sway.

A rough performance by either of them could reset the race.

'This week brings us potentially one of the most consequential debates since Mr. Kennedy and Richard Nixon’s,' wrote longtime Republican pollster Frank Luntz, referencing the historic 1960 debate that many historians believe gave Kennedy a critical lift in the first debate of the modern television era.

The debate puts the incumbent president back onstage with the fierce rival who skipped his inauguration and used their last televised meeting to go after his son. Trump warns that 'if we don't win this election, we won't have a country left', as he faces three criminal trials in addition to the one that just resulted in a historic conviction this spring.

In an effort to keep the blockbuster presidential debate on track Thursday night, microphones will be muted for candidates when it’s not their turn to speak.

But some believe the move which was initially seen as one that could help President Biden from being endlessly interrupted by Donald Trump could come back to haunt him.

CNN demonstrated how the muted mics will work in a preview of the must-watch 90-minute political event hosted by anchors Dana Bash and Jake Tapper.

When it’s Biden or Trump’s turn to speak, there will be two green lights on behind their podium signaling the mic is on. When they speak, the audience can then hear them.

But those green lights are off when it is not in a candidate’s turn and their mic is muted.

CNN showed that when the candidate is seen on television attempting to interrupt or speak with the mic off, they cannot be heard on TV.

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will broadcast a livestreamed response to the debate.

Kennedy's absence from the debate stage carries risk for his insurgent quest to shake up the Republican and Democratic dominance of the U.S. political system.

The candidate says he can't win unless voters know he's running and believe he can defeat Biden, a Democrat, and Trump, a Republican.

That problem will become increasingly acute as the debate, followed by the major party conventions in July and August, push more voters to tune into the race.

Stefanie Spear, a Kennedy campaign spokeswoman, said:

Nearly half of registered voters think President Joe Biden will bomb in tonight’s prime time debate in CNN, according to a new New York Times / Siena College poll.

That includes 24 percent who think the president will do ‘not too well’ and a quarter who believe he’ll perform ‘not well at all.’

That is a worse prediction than how voters think Donald Trump, 78, will fare against Biden, 81. Fifteen percent think Trump will do ‘not too well’ and 19 percent think he’ll do not well at all, for a total of 34 percent predicting a bad night for him.

The negative predictions aren’t necessarily bad for Biden. Candidates can have a strong night by beating people’s expectations, which is one reason Trump has been talking up Biden’s skills of late and even suggesting without evidence that he’ll be medicated. But the poll has a bad top-line number for Biden: voters would pick Trump over him 48-42 if the election were held today.
