A 5.8 magnitude earthquake has struck Mexico City and sent anxious residents out into the streets as buildings shook.

It was reported on Thursday afternoon and earthquake sirens blared throughout the Mexican capital to alert everyone.

People immediately left their homes and businesses and ran out onto the streets following the loud alert.

The tremor registered a 5.8 magnitude, according to the US Geological Survey, and its epicenter struck the central state of Puebla, south of Mexico City, at a depth of 27 miles.

There were no immediate reports of any damage in the area and residents appeared to go back to work or home after a short period.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred at about 2.03pm near Chiautla de Tapia.

Mexico's head of the federal civil defense agency said there were no immediate reports of damage anywhere around Chiautla.

Acting Mexico City Mayor Martí Batres said there were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries in the capital.

The tremor set off the Mexico City earthquake alarm system and people left apartment and office buildings in neighborhoods across the city.

Groups of office workers gathered on sidewalks along the city’s downtown Reforma boulevard.

Manuel Maldonado was driving in the capital's central Anzures neighborhood when the alarm sounded and traffic stopped. He said he could feel his car shake.

'This one's strong. For it to move the car, it's strong,' he said.
