A woman learned she was sexually assaulted after a man she had been dating sent her footage of him abusing her while she slept in the same bed as him.

David Wiari Wehi, 50, faced Rotorua District Court, on New Zealand's North Island, and pleaded guilty to three charges including sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, threatening to kill and making intimate visual recordings.

A police summary of facts was released ahead of his sentencing next month and revealed the shocking details of sexual abuse the woman endured.

Wehi and the woman began an intimate relationship, but after a few months he became 'possessive and persistent', the summary read.

The woman set clear boundaries with Wehi and on one occasion, when he wanted to use his mobile phone to record her sexually, she clearly indicated she was 'not into that' and did not consent to any intimate visual recordings.

The woman was filmed in a sexually explicit way while she was asleep and was threatened with the videos

The summary said the pair did not see each other for about two months and when they did Wehi became possessive and angry as he wanted more from the relationship.

The woman received 270 text messages, most of which were abusive, leading her to block Wehi's number before unblocking it a few weeks later.

She ran into him again that month and stayed the night with him. The pair met up the following night and he stayed at the woman's house.

The woman remembered going straight to bed wearing her nightie and underwear and did not engage sexually with Wehi, the Rotorua Daily Post reported.

When she awoke, her underwear was missing and she was covered only by a sheet as her blanket was on the floor.

The summary indicated the woman did not think too much of it at the time as Wehi had left before she woke up.

However, in the following weeks he began contacting her again and sent her threatening messages.

She received three photographs and two videos from Wehi, with one showing her being sexually violated while she slept.

She recognised her body and bedding in the videos and was even able to hear herself snoring, the summary said.

The woman said she was not aware she was sexually engaging with Wehi and did not consent to being recorded.

New Zealand man David Wiari Wehi, 50, pleaded guilty to sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, threatening to kill and making intimate visual recordings

Wehi threatened to send the videos to her friends and claimed he would make a Facebook page where he would post it so that everyone would see the recordings.

He continued sending threatening messages, claiming he would kill her and throw her in a hot pool or burn down her house, the summary said.

The woman, fearing for her life, blocked Wehi's number and reported the messages and recordings to police.

Wehi is set to face court on July 26 for sentencing.

The 50-year-old could  face up to 30 years in jail, with the sexual violation offence carrying a maximum sentence 20 years, threatening to kill up to seven years and three years in jail making an intimate visual recording.
