A 25-year-old independent candidate who became known as an influencer on YouTube and TikTok was the big surprise of the EU elections in Cyprus as he managed to rank third and become elected as an MEP.
Centre-right Democratic Rally (DISY-EPP) ranked first with 24.7%, followed by AKEL (EU Left), which scored 21.6%. The influencer’s “Phidias” party came third, scoring 19.3%, and the far-right National Popular Front (ELAM-ECR) came fourth with 11.2%.
After announcing the results, influencer Phidias Panagiotou stated that his victory was a message to the established parties that they need to “modernise” and realise that “they should serve people and not their personal or party interests”.
“I will try to be the best and most useful Cypriot MEP”, he added.
Panagiotou became known to the general public due to his presence on YouTube and TikTok, while he made it clear from the very beginning that he had no idea about politics.
