Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will travel to Portugal on Tuesday to meet his Portuguese counterpart Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, the Portuguese presidency said on Monday, the same day the Ukrainian leader visited Spain.

“At the invitation of the country’s president and prime minister, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will travel to Portugal tomorrow [Tuesday], 28 May,” reads a note published on the official website of the country’s president.

According to a release issued simultaneously by the office of Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, “Zelenskyy’s working visit is part of the shared intention to deepen the excellent relations between the two states, with a particular focus on strengthening cooperation in the field of security and defence”.

“During his stay, the president of Ukraine will hold working meetings with the prime minister, Luís Montenegro, and will be received by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa,” the text adds.

According to the same joint note, Zelenskyy’s visit to Portugal “will also be an opportunity to reiterate Portugal’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as to maintaining political, military, financial and humanitarian support for Kyiv”.

Zelenskyy confirmed that he will visit Portugal during his visit to Spain on Monday, although he was originally scheduled to visit the country on 17 May.

“Yes, I plan to go to Portugal,” Zelenskyy said at a press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Madrid.
