A teen has been rushed to hospital in a critical condition after an excursion to an ice skating rink ended in horror.

The boy is understood to have suffered life threatening injuries at the Alpine Ice Sports Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand on Tuesday morning.

Emergency services were called to the rink after reports that a student on a school trip had taken a serious fall while skating on the ice.

Two ambulances were sent to the rink, where paramedics treated the boy before he was rushed to Christchurch Hospital.

'We can confirm that an incident occurred during our public skating session today,' a spokesperson from the sports centre told the New Zealand Herald

General manager Finn O'Leary said the incident happened during a public skating session.

Mr O'Leary said his thoughts were with the boy and his family.
