Portugal’s foreign minister, Paulo Rangel, said on Monday that the candidacy of António Costa to chair the European Council was still on the table but warned that work must continue until this week’s meeting.
“Eight days ago, there was an informal [European] Council, and the Prime Minister made a statement in the evening,” he said, referring to centre-right Prime Minister Luís Montenegro backing Costa for the post.
“The statement still stands,” Paulo Rangel told journalists on the sidelines of a ministerial meeting in Luxembourg.
The minister added that the name of Costa to become the President of the European Council was still on the table: “That is our perception so far,” he said.
“As you know, I always maintain that the decision rests with the [European] Council. We all have to work until then,” he added.
