Argentina’s President Javier Milei will travel to Madrid next May to publicly endorse Spain’s far-right VOX leader Santiago Abascal ahead of EU elections.
Milei, who describes himself as a “libertarian” confirmed on Friday that he would be attending VOX’s annual convention to back Abascal’s party a few days before their EU election campaign kicks-off, Euractiv’s partner EFE reported.
In Spain, VOX governs in coalition with the main opposition force, Partido Popular (EPP), in several municipalities and regions.
“There I will be with you again, dear friend…! Viva la libertad carajo…!!!!” Milei said on X in response to Abascal’s invitation to participate in the party’s annual convention, which this year will be held on 18 and 19 May in the Spanish capital.
Milei and Abascal have a long-standing friendship and the VOX leader was present at the inauguration of the Argentinian president on 10 December.
The latest Europe Elects polls for Euractiv show a tough battle between the Renew Europe group with ECR and the “ultra” Identity and Democracy (ID) group for third place, behind the European People’s Party (EPP) and the socialist S&D group.
In his message on X, Milei said he was proud to support Abascal, which he said “brings together global voices promoting the ideas of freedom”.
The Argentinian President recalled that in his speech at the Vox 2022 Congress, “he stated that people who escape always do so from socialism to free countries”.
