Arsenal were dealt a double blow following their defeat to Bayern Munich, as it meant that they also missed out on a place in next year's expanded Club World Cup.

Mikel Arteta's side were dumped out of the Champions League on Wednesday night, after Joshua Kimmich's header gave the German side a 3-2 lead on aggregate.

It was a crushing blow for the Gunners, who had initially lead in the first leg of the tie before the German side made a managed to find an equaliser.

The result now means that Arsenal will miss out on a place in next year's Club World Cup, with FC Salzburg set to take the final spot in the competition.

The revamped version of the tournament will feature 32 teams, with 12 representing  UEFA and six from the CONMEBOL, its South American counterpart.

As a result, Austrian side FC Salzburg will take the final spot in next year's Club World Cup

The AFC, CAF and CONCACAF will be represented by four clubs each, with the OFC and the host association awarded one slot each.

A place reserved for this year's Champions League winners, which could've been Arsenal prior to their defeat against Bayern Munich.

However, now, all four teams in the semi-finals have already qualified for the Club World Cup, meaning the place has been reallocated.

It then goes to the best-performing club in the Champions League over the past four years, who are not already in the competition.

A number of teams, such as Liverpool and Napoli, ranked ahead of Salzburg however, due to a two-club limit on teams from one country, the Austrain side take the place.

They made the Champions League round of 16 in 2022 and have been in the group stages of the competition across the last four years.

Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City have qualified by virtue of winning the Champions League over the past three seasons.

Meanwhile another eight clubs - Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Porto, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Atletico Madrid - have qualified based on UEFA's four-year ranking.

Salzburg have never won a European trophy, only going as far as losing the 1994 UEFA Cup final to Inter Milan when they were still known as Austria Salzburg.

Salzburg had to wait 61 years for their first league title in 1994 before adding two more over the next three years, but have become Austrian football's dominant force since being taken over by Red Bull in 2006.

RB Salzburg have won the Austrian Bundesliga in 14 of the last 18 seasons, finishing as runner-ups on the other four occasions and are currently bidding to win their 11th consecutive title.
