Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Spain international Mariona Caldentey on a free transfer from Barcelona.

The 28-year-old forward, who will wear the No 8 shirt, arrives in north London having won 25 trophies in 10 years with the Catalans.

The signing, which is subject to regulatory process, demonstrates Arsenal’s intent to push for silverware this season, with the club having finished third in the Women’s Super League for a second successive season last term.

The Gunners will play eight of their 11 home matches at the Emirates next season and will also host three Champions League group fixtures there, should they progress through the qualifying stages.

Arsenal broke the WSL attendance record three times last season and Mail Sport understands their work off the pitch was a factor in Mariona’s decision to join the club.

‘This is the right time for a new challenge for me and Arsenal is the perfect place,’ Mariona said.

‘I think what Arsenal are doing as a club is amazing – on and off the pitch. I love the way we want to play as a team and I think there’s a strong mentality building here.

‘It’s been incredible to see what the club has done away from the pitch, with supporters following the team everywhere and lots of records being broken.

‘I can’t wait to get started and help the team win trophies and entertain our supporters.’

Mariona is Arsenal’s first signing of the summer and adds depth to their attacking options following the departure of Vivianne Miedema.

‘Mariona is a world-class forward and we are delighted to bring her to Arsenal,’ boss Jonas Eidevall said.

‘She’s a winner with proven experience of excelling on the biggest stage, which is exactly where we aim to be at this club. We believe Mariona will be a superb addition to our squad here at Arsenal, as we prepare for an exciting new season together.’
