Ashley Young has revealed which two Manchester United stars were spared Sir Alex Ferguson's infamous hairdryer treatment during his time at the club.

The winger turned fullback played under the legendary manager in his final two seasons before retiring in 2013, winning the league title in that final campaign.

Notable for an incredible dedication that has seen him continue to perform in the top-flight despite approaching his 39th birthday, Young took time out from his relentless schedule to appear on Sky Sports Monday Night Football.

The ex-United star opened up on his time at Old Trafford and praised the man-management skills of his old boss.

'He knew his teams, he knew how to deal with every player.' Young said. 'Whether it was that they need the hairdryer or an arm round their shoulder.'

The 38-year-old won the Premier League with United in Ferguson's last campaign before retirement

When asked by fellow pundit Jamie Carragher which one he received, Young replied: 'Just an arm around my shoulder.

'I think there was two players that didn't get the hairdryer. And that was me and Darren Fletcher, I think.

'There might have been other players previous to my time but at them times I knew I didn't need telling what to do.

'I just needed an arm around the shoulder to go "right son this is what you need to do," and that was it.'

Fletcher graduated from the club's academy before going on to make more than 300 appearances, winning five league title, three League Cups, the FA Cup and Champions League.

The Scotland international returned to Old Trafford after retirement and currently holds the position of technical director.

Meanwhile, Young played under David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before leaving United for Inter Milan in 2020.

Young has made 32 appearances for Everton this season, having spent time with Inter Milan and Aston Villa since leaving Old Trafford

He got his hands on the Serie A title in his debut campaign before returning to the Premier League with Aston Villa in 2021.

Young was drafted in at Everton by his former Watford team-mate Sean Dyche last summer and has made 32 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees this term.
