Five minutes until team news
Is anybody else getting as excited as I am, right now?
Both teams have arrived at the Arriva Stadium for tonight's Europa League final.
There are a mix of serious faces and smiles as the teams get off the coach and check out the turf.
We are now just five minutes from learning who will be starting...
Xabi Alonso: ‘Now is the time to give our best’
Xabi Alonso, Bayer Leverkusen boss, speaking on Tuesday:
A first European final for Atalanta
Trophies and Atalanta don’t exactly go hand-in-hand…
The Italian side have felt the pain of final losses many times over the years, including three times under manager Gian Piero Gasperini. The fans are not accustomed to silverware.
In fact, they have won just a single major trophy in the club’s 116-year history, and that was all the way back in 1963. Surely, it’s about time that changes?
Well, their task of doing so doesn’t get much harder than this. Imagine rocking up to a final and your opponent hasn’t lost a single game this season.
Gasperini won’t be thinking like that, though, he has done some magical things during his time in Bergamo.
They will need that magic tonight.
Stop two on Leverkusen’s treble hunt
‘Neverkusen’ no more, Bayer Leverkusen’s trophy trail continues in Dublin.
A remarkable story has unfolded at Leverkusen this season, one that absolutely nobody foresaw.
Their record-breaking unbeaten streak of 51 matches this season has already seen them triumph in the Bundesliga for the first time ever.
Xabi Alonso’s side are just 180 minutes from an unprecedented invincible treble. Just writing that made my jaw drop, it’s hard to wrap your head around.
However, it might sound likely on paper, but Atalanta are in Dublin to spoil their season, they have motivations of their own.
I simply cannot wait for this match to get started…
European glory on the line…
There is a lot at stake tonight, but something has to give.
On one end of the stick, you have Bayer Leverkusen, who are yet to lose this season and are on a record 51-match unbeaten streak in all competitions.
And on the other, you have Atalanta. The Italian side have never reached a European final before and are looking to end a 61-year trophy drought.
It just feels like there is that extra level of importance on this evening’s Europa League showcase. Neither side has tasted European glory before.
However, that changes tonight. It’s set to be a belter of a final, so get yourselves comfortable for another box office night of football.
Let’s get this show on the road!
