Aussie golf star Curtis Luck lived up to his surname with a brilliant ace on the Australian PGA Championship's 'Party Hole' on Friday - but barely anyone saw the feat.

His gap wedge spun sharply left to run into the cup during the second round at Royal Queensland, with Luck spotted giving his ball to youngster Theo Smith, the son of his caddie Duane.

Theo's mother, Australian professional golfer Sarah Jane Smith, was among the handful of spectators who also witnessed Luck's inch-perfect effort from the tee in the flesh.

If Luck, 27, achieved every golfer's dream later in the tournament, the West Australian may have been drenched in beer by the rowdy crowd.

In April this year, Chase Koepka nailed an ace at the 'watering hole' during the LIV event in Adelaide, sparking euphoric scenes.

Meanwhile, local hope Cameron Smith conceded he needs to be near faultless on Friday if he is to avoid the cut following an uncharacteristic poor first round.

Smith, 30, has won three of the last five tournaments in his home state, but the defending champion shot an opening round of 73 — which he later labelled 'terrible' and 'crappy.'

It left Smith tied for 109th heading into the second round at Royal Queensland.

With only 65 players progressing to the third round on Saturday, the 2022 British Open champion will need to be clinical from the first hole.

'It was getting to the point [out there] where it was just hard to really commit to a shot,' Smith said when reflecting on his first round.

'I felt like I was over the ball not knowing what I was going to do, which is a pretty bad place to be in on a golf course.'

Another Aussie to watch this weekend is Min Woo Lee, who won the recent Macau Open and recorded top-six finishes at the US Open and The Players Championship.

Other homegrown talent chasing glory include Adam Scott, veteran Marc Leishman and rising star Cam Davis.
