A wanted man remains on the run despite being found asleep behind the wheel of a luxury car when he stopped at a set of traffic lights.

Motorists alerted police officers to the bizarre sight after the man stopped the car at a red light at an intersection on Belgrave-Hallam Road, Hallam, in Melbourne's southeast on Monday around 2pm.

Shocking footage captured the moment the man stopped at the lights and taking a nap, along with another male passenger in the black Mercedes sedan.

Drivers nearby began to film and take pictures of their odd encounter with the man, who is wanted by authorities for allegedly earlier evading police.

The man was asleep for at least 20 minutes at the red light before the cops rushed to the scene, according to 7News

Police said paramedics tried to wake the diver up before officers told the man to step out of the vehicle when he woke up a short time later.

A heavily tattooed male officer then yelled at the man not to drive off as he began to move the car forward.

'Do not... get out of the car, get out of the car now!' the officer yelled.

The driver disobeyed his instructions and with the intersection clear of police vehicles and oncoming traffic, stepped on the accelerator and sped off.

The man was driving a high-powered Mercedes C63 AMG worth more than $100,000.

A spokeswoman from Victoria Police told Daily Mail Australia the driver allegedly 'failed to stop' when he was being pursued by police, before he managed to get away for the second time.

'No arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing,' the spokeswoman said.

The driver still remains on the run.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage, has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
