A young family have begun house hunting amid fears for their safety after their home was mistakenly targeted in a drive-by shooting for the second time within a fortnight.

Hardeep Kaur was watching television with her husband and their two children when several gun shots were fired into their Virginia Street home in Blacktown, in Sydney's west, around 9pm on Saturday.

Ms Kaur described the 'horrible' moment the family of four were forced to duck for cover as bullets pierced through the front window.

One bullet missed her five-year-old son's head by a few centimetres.

Hardeep Kaur (pictured) said one of the gun shots narrowly missed her son's head as the shooters opened fire on her Blacktown home, in Sydney's west on Saturday night

'I just told him to bend down, it could [have been] just one second, ' Ms Kaur told Nine News

She grabbed her phone and called police as the gunman fled the scene.

Chilling CCTV footage from a nearby home showed a white ute travelling down the street moments before the shooting.

Ms Kaur and her terrified family are now searching for a new place to live.

'We can't hide behind the doors, we can't hide our children,' she said.

'It's not us, we are not doing anything.'

The family doesn't want to move but the fear of another ambush has left them with no choice.

The home was previously targeted on April, 13 when nine bullets were fired into the couple's bedroom window

Bullets grazed the bedroom door and the nearby bathroom.

The Kaurs were not home at the time.

Police seized a Ford Ranger ute abandoned in nearby Eastern Creek hours later on Sunday morning.

Officers believe the ute is linked to Saturday night's drive-by shooting.

'This family is innocent and we believe this is a mistaken identity,' Inspector Kelly Evans told reporters.
