Brentford ended their run goalless run in truly dramatic fashion with a late 2-1 win over Bournemouth, Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa sinking the Cherries either side of Dominic Solanke’s 19th strike of the season.
Mbeumo scored his 50th goal for the club on 86 minutes before Solanke’s equaliser looked to have sealed an impressive 49th point for the Cherries in their quest for a top-half finish.
But Wissa’s emphatic finish from close range left the hosts with nothing to show for their efforts following this gut-wrenching defeat, in a game that saw VAR have its say after denying Solanke following a handball by Semenyo in the first half, and overturning a penalty in the visitors’ favour in the second.
It was a flying start from the visitors, who hadn’t lost a league game to Bournemouth in almost a decade.
By four minutes they had already won three corners and by the seventh the Bees recorded their second shot on target.
Yoane Wissa celebrates scoring the later winner as Brentford beat Bournemouth
Bryan Mbuemo put the Bees ahead right at the end of the second half against Bournemouth
Dominic Solanke immediately hit back and looked to have saved a point for the home side
But the Cherries soon worked their way up the pitch, with Antoine Semenyo in particular proving a dangerous outlet.

After a drive from range whistled over the bar in the 16th minute, he missed a golden opportunity six minutes later, shanking his effort wide of the post from six yards after a sharp through ball from Justin Kluivert.
Semenyo then set up Dominic Solanke for what looked to be the opener on 27 minutes, the striker sprinting into the box before finishing low into the bottom left corner, but it would not count.
A VAR review ruled out the goal after the ball pinged up into Semenyo’s arm as he jostled with Reguilon from point blank range before teeing up Solanke, with referee Matthew Donohue overruling his on-field decision after a monitor review.
Brentford continued to have joy down the flanks, sending in several testing crosses towards Ivan Toney, but again it was Bournemouth’s Solanke who had the ball in the back of the net, yet once more it would not count after a foul in the build-up.
Much like they had in the opening phases, Brentford raced onto the front foot after the interval, with a last ditch Lloyd Kelly tackle denying Ivan Toney a first goal since February, but Kluivert led Bournemouth’s riposte with the Dutch star piling on the pressure, dancing off his left flank to great effect.
Brentford’s Keane Lewis-Potter then came close to a goal against the run of play, but fluffed his lines at the last from close range after grounding Travers.
The forward’s soft attempt was cleared by Ryan Christie tracking back to rescue the hosts.
After denying Toney just after the break, Kelly then came close himself on 65 minutes, flicking on a corner at the near post towards the back stick, but there was neither enough bend nor an on-rushing team-mate to guide it the right side of the woodwork.
The Bees had a penalty decision overturned in the second half when they thought they'd won a spot kick
The home side had two goals chalked off in the first half and had some complaints
On 73 minutes though it was Bournemouth who had VAR to thank. Toney went down under the soft challenge of Illia Zabarnyi, and left referee Donohue pointing to the spot, only to reverse both the contentious decision and the yellow card shown to the defender.
Brentford threatened to inflict an almighty suckerpunch on the hosts when Mbeumo netted his 50th for the club on 86 minutes, Yoane Wissa setting him up with a first time pass following a goal kick, before Solanke eventually got his 19th for the season.
With the Cherries looking set for a well-earned point, second-half substitute Wissa struck from inside the area in the fifth minute of added time, Mbeumo turning provider, as the Bees head back to west London with three big points in the bag.
