Australian boxer Charlie Senior has paid an emotional tribute to his grandfather following his victory at the Olympic Games.
Senior, 22, wore a gumshield etched with the name of his grandfather Dennis as he secured a split decision victory over Vasile Usturoi in Paris.
The Australian missed Dennis's funeral after he lost his battle with cancer just before the Olympic qualifiers last December, with Senior unable to make the trip over to England - the country of his birth - to pay his respects.
'I was unfortunately not able to go to the funeral or see him (before he passed),' Senior told the Sydney Morning Herald.
'That was my piece for him. My mum and dad and my little sister are here. My grandma, Dennis' wife, she's here and travelled from England. She's supporting me and that's a big thing.'
Senior said he did not regret missing Dennis's funeral, insisting that his sacrifices will pay off if he can accomplish his Olympics dream.

'You can't be there for everything. I've missed a lot. But I'd do it again. I'm missing things for the right reasons.'
Senior, who was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire before moving to Perth at the age of two, says his grandfather's memory will drive him on as he competes in the men's 57kg division in Paris.
'I'm sure I'm making him proud,' Senior said.
Earlier on Wednesday, Australia boxing captain Caitlin Parker produced a stunning performance to advance in the women's 75kg division.
