Boy aged 11 dead after freak cricket accident as police launch investigation

A boy aged 11 has died after he was hit in the groin by a cricket ball while practising.

The victim, named as Shaurya Kalidas Khandve by news.com.au, passed away after leaving the Jagad Guru Sports Academy in Pune, India, earlier this month.

He was hit in the groin after bowling a ball, with the freak accident caught on camera.


The footage shows the youngster wearing a dark red T-shirt taking a run-up and bowling the ball, which is fired back at him rapidly.

The ball hits him in the groin area and he immediately doubles over.

He drops to the ground, then stands up before collapsing again moments later.

Several friends check on the boy, now motionless, before administering CPR and seeking medical help. 

He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. 

Sachin Dhamane, a police spokesperson, confirmed an investigation into the incident has been launched,.

Officers are awaiting the results of an autopsy and have interviewed witnesses of the incident.

Shaurya was known as Shambhu to his friends and was a sports fanatic who held apsitations of becoming a professional wrestler.

The Pune Airport Police Station has registered his death as accidental.
