Goal:Brighton 1-2 Man United (Garnacho 70')

They have turned it around!

Brighton 1-1 Man United

The momentum is certainly now with Manchester United.

Brighton have lost their spark and it's the visitors who are having all the ball.

A different look to this game now.

SUBSTITUTION: Brighton 1-1 Man United

Amad Diallo's goal may have just saved him from being substituted.

Alejandro Garnacho enters the action but rather than Diallo coming off, it's Marcus Rashford.

The United fans serenade the Argentine as he comes on.

Brighton 1-1 Man United

That's a huge goal for Manchester United.

They has their back pinned up against the wall and looked in real trouble, then bang, they're level.

Can they go on and win this?

Goal:Brighton 1-1 Man United (Diallo 60')

Manchester United are level!

Just as Brighton were dominating the Red Devils but they have hit back through Amad Diallo.

He races away on the right-hand side, cuts inside, and fires past Jason Steele via a deflection.

Level against the run of play.

OFF THE BAR! Brighton 1-0 Man United

So close to a second from Danny Welbeck!

The former United man comes within inches of a brace has he smashes a header off the bar from Yankuba Minteh's free-kick.

Welbeck is just six yards out, he should probably do better. It is one hell of a connection, though.

United are all over the place at the moment.

Brighton 1-0 Man United

Manchester United fans are making it clear who they want to see come off the bench.

A rendition of 'Viva Garnacho' is sung loudly and proudly by the away fans as he warms up.

Will we see the winger soon?

Brighton 1-0 Man United

This second half is so much livelier than the first, I love it.

This time Danny Welbeck has an effort on goal as he heads Yankuba Minteh's cross just over the bar.

Chances galore!

Brighton 1-0 Man United

Now it's Manchester United's turn to come close.

They loft the ball over the top before Bruno Fernandes works the ball over to Joshua Zirkzee on the left.

The Dutchman gives it back to Fernandes in the box but the latter cannot get off a decent strike.

OFF THE LINE! Brighton 1-0 Man United

Diogo Dalot to the rescue for Manchester United!

Joao Pedro drives at the defence and slides James Milner in. The midfielder flicks the ball past Andre Onana and the ball is heading in.

Just as you think it's crossing the line, Dalot hooks the ball away.

I thought that was 2-0, I really did.

Brighton 1-0 Man United

It is lashing it down on the south coast.

These are the days I' glad I am in the office rather than at the stadium...

I'm lovely and warm.

Brighton 1-0 Man United

Fans are still tucking into their pies and pints it seems, the Amex is looking fairly empty even though the second half has been going on for four minutes.

Maybe they just want to avoid the rain?

Brighton 1-0 Man United

Nearly a thumping start to the second half for Brighton!

The ball breaks to James Milner just outside the area and he lines up a Thundercracker.

However, it's not the best of strikes from Milner, he smashes it over the bar.

SECOND HALF: Brighton 1-0 Man United

Joshua Zirkzee is indeed coming on at the break, he replaces Mason Mount up top.

Is Moung injured? I thought he was very good in the first half.

Anyway, Brighton get the ball rolling once more.

'Zirkzee warming up'

Chris Wheeler, Mail Sport, at the Amex Stadium:

Joshua Zirkzee is warming up on the pitch at half-time while the rest of his teammates are in the dressing room. Looks like last week's goal hero is coming on for the second half.

WATCH: Welbeck opens the scoring

Haven't seen the goal yet? Don't worry I've got you covered.

It isn't the prettiest of watches for Manchester United, who really should have dealt with the attack better.

How did they let Joao Pedro's cross cause so much danger, then who was tracking Danny Welbeck?

Poor defending.

Another leaky roof...

Are we playing at Old Trafford?

It seems Manchester United's stadium is not the only one suffering from leaks.

The Amex also seems to struggle with the rain...

100 up for Welbz

Danny Welbeck just can't stop scoring.

Year upon year, Welbeck bangs in the goals for whoever he is playing for and he already has two in two games this season.

Today's strike means he has now netted 100 goals in all competitions during his career, and he scored it against his former side.

It's also the 15th consecutive Premier League campaign he has scored in.

Incredible stuff from the striker.

'United wasted chances'

Chris Wheeler, Mail Sport, at the Amex Stadium:

Decent half for Man United despite the scoreline. They just need to be more clinical in front of goal - Amad, Casemiro, and Mount have all wasted chances. Fair play to Brighton, though.

HALF-TIME: Brighton 1-0 Man United

Brighton lead at the break.

It's an old Red Devil that has the hosts in front as Danny Welbeck was in the right place at the right time to open the scoring.

It was certainly against the run of play, Manchester United have played the much better football but have not been clinical.

I'd be lying if I said that it was a brilliant half of football, it wasn't the most exciting.

But the goal intensified proceedings and we are set for a massive second half.

ONE added minute

Just the one minute of stoppage time then.

Can Man United find a goal just before the break? They don't have much time to do it.

'Test of United's mettle'

Chris Wheeler, Mail Sport, at the Amex Stadium:

This will be a test of Utd's mettle. They have played well so far but lacked an end product.

Brighton 1-0 Man United

That opener had brought this game to life.

For 32 minutes there was not too much going on but now United are gunning for Brighton.

The atmosphere has also woken up - we finally have a game.

Brighton 1-0 Man United

Manchester United have responded really well to going behind.

Bruno Fernandes pulls an inviting ball back from Mason Mount to strike, and his midfield partner obliges.

It's a decent low effort from Mount which Jason Steele spills, but the keeper eventually deals with it and the flag is up for offside anyway.

DISALLOWED GOAL!

Manchester United think they have given the perfect response, but the flag is up.

Jason Steele makes an incredible save to deny Marcus Rashford with his head and the ball then bounces back off Rashford and in.

But the United forward strayed offside and Brighton remain in front.

What a crazy few minutes!

Goal:Brighton 1-0 Man United (Welbeck 32')

It just had to be Danny Welbeck!

Brighton have taken the lead out of the blue and it's Welbeck against his former side.

He brings up his 100th career goal by tapping home Koaru Mitoma's low cross from close range.

The Amex erupts!

Brighton 0-0 Man United

I have just seen Koaru Mitoma with the ball for the first time, he has been so, so quiet.

He loses the ball and Manchester United counter, but James Milner gets back to break up play.

CLOSE! Brighton 0-0 Man United

Diogo Dalot loves a screamer from time to time and he has just come close to scoring one here.

The defender lines up a curler outside the box and lets it fly. It's a decent strike but bends just wide and high of the goal.

For a second, I thought it might be heading in.

CLOSE! Brighton 0-0 Man United

Casemiro and headers, name a better duo.

The Brazilian got on the end of so many free-kicks and corners last week and he has done so again.

He rises highest to meet Amad Diallo's ball and heads inches over the bar.

Brighton 0-0 Man United

How has Joel Veltmen got away with that one?

He swipes the ball intentionally with his arm but gets away with it by only getting a warning.

It's clear as day as well, he might want to consider a new position as a goalkeeper.

Brighton 0-0 Man United

Yankuba Minteh hasn't quite settled into the match yet.

The winger is set free by a brilliant ball from Billy Gilmour, but he is dispossessed by Casemiro in the box.

the ball then comes back to him and he shanks a strike well wide. So wide it nearly goes out for a throw-in.

Brighton 0-0 Man United

Manchester United are very confident at playing out from the back.

They play some lovely football to beat the Brighton press before Mason Mount opens up the pitch by spreading the ball to Noussair Mazraoui.

He ends up losing the ball, but I must say, that was a superb move.

'What a cross'

Ally McCoist, former Rangers striker, on TNT Sports:

That's one of the best crosses I have seen in a long time, what a cross!

BIG CHANCE! Brighton 0-0 Man United

Oh, Amad Diallo. What a chance to open the scoring!

Diogo Dalot whips in an incredible cross from the left-hand side and Diallo runs onto it.

You just expect him to smash it home, but he acrobatically sweeps it wide from inside the area.

United should be ahead.

Brighton 0-0 Man United

That's much better from Brighton.

They win the ball high up the pitch and work it to Joao Pedro on the edge of the box.

The attacker fancies his chances and has a crack from distance, but the ball dribbles well wide.

Not the best of shots, but good build-up play.

Brighton 0-0 Man United

The ball is really skidding off the Amex surface.

There have already been a couple of instances where it has run out of play due to the dampness of the pitch.

It can sometimes make games zippy, but not this one.

Brighton 0-0 Man United

Just as I clicked go on the last post, Yankuba Minteh tried to make the match a little exciting.

He bursts past Diogo Dalot on the right-hand side, but his cross into the area can only find Andre Onana.

Minteh really is rapid.

Brighton 0-0 Man United

It's not been the fastest of starts to a match that I have ever seen.

Manchester United have just been stroking it about at the back before losing the ball.

Brighton then do exactly the same...

Patience could be key in this one, going by the early moments.

KICK-OFF: Brighton 0-0 Man United

The Amex is absolutely bouncing, the fans are really up for this one.

The smoke from the pyro has now cleared and Manchester United get the game underway.

Let's hope it's a belter.

Here come the teams!

There goes the fire!

I don't think it has done much to warm up the crowd but it looks cool at least.

The players are now out and unfortunately, that signifies that we will have to listen to the Premier League pre-match track.

It's terrible, but short at least.

'Oh, what a beautiful...'

Aren't Brighton a bunch of jokers?

Whoever is in charge of the music is having a great time, they are currently playing U2's Beautiful Day.

It's absolutely chucking it down...

There is some Pyro prepared for when the teams come out, I'm sure that will heat fans up.

Hurzeler: 'Minteh is very important'

Fabian Hurzeler, Brighton boss, speaking on TNT Sports:

Minteh is very important, not only with the ball in possession, also out of possession, because he works really good against the ball. He's a very good transition player. And of course, like I was also happy with the performance from Simon [Adingra last week].
In the end, I want to give him [Minteh] the chance to show how good he is, because he shows it every day in training. I'm really looking forward to him.

Kick-off closing in...

Excitement levels are starting to ramp up.

Well, mine are anyway.

Both teams have now finished their warm-ups and are listening to their final team talks before play gets underway.

It seems their mood is matching that of the weather, going by these photos.

Advantage Brighton?

Brighton love a match against the Red Devils.

They have won four of their last five fixtures with Manchester United and have beaten them in 43 per cent of their league meetings with them.

United have never lost a higher percentage of matches against any other Premier League opponent.

United aim for 200 under Ten Hag

Manchester United could hit a milestone under Erik ten Hag today.

In just over two years under the Dutchman, United have netted 198 goals in all competitions.

Just two more and they will hit the big 200.

If they score that many today, you'd think they would come away from the south coast with at least a point.

Shearer: 'Tough game for United'

Alan Shearer, former Newcastle United striker, speaking on Brighton vs Man United to Betfair:

Brighton had an outstanding result of the weekend, going to Everton with the new and youngest manager in the league and they were sensational.
Danny Welbeck up front, Kaoru Mitoma, and Yankuba Minteh, who I know had to go off at half-time, but Simon Adingra came on who was superb as well. What a great result for  Brighton, going away and winning by three goals.
It will be a very tough game for Manchester United, they got a result as well of course, albeit they did not play that well, but they got the right result which is the important thing at this stage of the season. It's a tough one for Manchester United, to visit a team who won by three goals on the road last weekend. It's a tough game to predict but I think it will be a score draw.

Casemiro back to his best?

Casemiro at his best was the best defensive midfielder in the world.

During his time at Real Madrid, he was one of the most sought-after players out there. That's why when Manchester United got him, everybody at the club was buzzing.

However, the Casemiro that played last season was not the same player as years gone by.

Questions were asked whether the Brazilian has a future at the club. He's 32 years old and has lost a few yards of place.

But last week he tried to answer those questions himself by putting in a brilliant display against Fulham.

He looked stronger, leaner, and quicker.

If Casemiro plays like that all season, United will be in a strong position.

Ten Hag: 'We have to improve'

Erik ten Hag, Manchester United boss, speaking to TNT Sports:

We won last week, but after we brought the subs. Subs are always very important. So you have starters and your finishers, not everything was 100 per cent and that's quite normal in the start of the season, especially after the pre-season we had. So we have to work. We have to improve. But yeah, there were, glimpses of how we want to play in the game, and now we have to build on.
It's very important that we are hard to beat, but I know when our squad is complete, as we showed in the Cup final, then we can beat everyone, but we have to do it more consistently, and that starts with everyone available.

On Jadon Sancho being left out:

He's here, but a choice to make and we had some issues. We need a full squad, and he's one of them, he has to compete for his position, but also from game to game we will have a look. We need it in the squad every position because it's going to be a long season.

No Sancho... AGAIN

What will Jadon Sancho be thinking?

Yet again, Erik ten Hag has not selected the winger in the squad. Statement incoming?

I doubt it, unlike Raheem Sterling, Sancho is actually involved in the first team. Sancho is actually in Brighton today.

I'm sure he will be itching to play, but he will have to be patient.

'I thought United would start the same'

Rio Ferdinand, former Manchester United defender, on TNT Sports:

I thought they'd be the same team again unless Rasmus Hojlund made a miraculous recovery. I think the game could have been three or four against Fulham, but with better finishing, Bruno Fernandes gets them two chances that he had in that game. Any other game probably scores two goals.
So there were many positives to take out of that game, and I think that, as I said, as a unit and as a team, I think they perform in a way that I think the manager will say, that's a good starting point for us.

STAT PACK: Brighton vs Man United

Our friends at Squakwa have been very kind to share with us their weekly stat pack.

As you can see, the sides have been very close in the past. They have never even drawn a match in the Premier League.

Brighton have scored more and conceded less, but United have more victories to their name.

If reading this doesn't get you excited, what will?

'Not surprised to see unchanged United'

Chris Wheeler, Mail Sport, at the Amex Stadium:

Not surprised to see an unchanged Man United team considering the fitness issues and last week’s opening win over Fulham. Amad Diallo is said to have been determined to play despite announcing the death of his stepmother yesterday.

Magic Minteh

Oh boy, am I excited to see this fella play football again?

Yankuba Minteh was incredibly impressive for Brighton away at Everton last weekend.

He gave Vitaly Mykolenko a torrid time on the Toffees left, he didn't know where to look.

Minteh signed from Newcastle in the summer and already got his first assist last weekend (the first of many).

Diogo Daloit will have to be prepared for a long old afternoon.

Amad over Garnacho

I must admit, this is not what I was expecting.

Amad Diallo wasn't on his best form last week and when Alejandro Garnacho came on, he changed the game.

Also, with Diallo announcing the death of his stepmother just yesterday it was unclear whether he would play.

So, I presumed that we would be seeing Garnacho from the start today.

Well, I was wrong.

Diallo keeps his spot and has the chance to shine yet again, an amazing mentality to have with everything he has going on.

Brighton Team News - Gilmour STARTS

Just the one change for Brighton then.

Billy Gilmour comes into the 11, replacing Mat Wieffer, and will partner James Milner.

New club record signing Georginio Rutter is named on the bench, so we may see him in his new strip later on.

Thoughts, Brighton fans?

Man United Team News - UNCHANGED

Erik ten Hag has named his second starting lineup of the season.

Interestingly, the Dutchman has stuck to his guns and started the exact same team as last Friday against Fulham.

That means that match-winner Joshua Zirkzee remains on the bench alongside fellow signing Matthijs de Ligt.

Also, Alejandro Garnacho has not done enough to force his way into the side.

A new United

Last week's win was a perfect way for Manchester United to start the new season after how the last one went.

I must say, Erik ten Hag's side were rather impressive. They looked a far cry from the shaky side we are used to seeing.

Yes, it was not the most convincing win, needing an 87th-minute winner from debutant Joshua Zirkzee to get the points, but the fact they managed to get it was the impressive part.

United did not have that mentality last year, but it took just one week to show that they are stronger this time around.

So, can they build on that start?

Brighton has not been the happiest of hunting grounds for them, but they did end their poor run there with a win at the back end of last season.

Ten Hag will want them to flex their muscles on the south coast.

Hurzeler: 'I can also learn from the players'

Fabian Hurzeler, Brighton boss, speaking on Thursday:

That’s one of my styles to lead – I’m listening to the experienced players because I can also learn from them. That’s something very open and the players know it. In the end, they have experienced more things on the pitch than me – I’m not afraid of saying that because it’s true. I can learn from them and hear their opinions to help me prepare for a match against Manchester United.
Danny Welbeck played there and maybe he has some more knowledge about the club and about the behaviour of their players. I would be silly if I didn’t use it. In the end, of course, it’s my job to make the decisions and the clear preparation to have the right match plan for a great opponent.
In games like Manchester United, there will be moments where we have to suffer together. There will be moments where maybe United control the game. And then you have to stand together, then you have to suffer together.
I would love that the fans are still behind us and supporting us. That’s our job, to build this connection with the fans, and it only works if we give a lot of input and a lot of energy on the pitch, and a lot of intensity.

Brighton & Hove Albion coach Fabian Hurzeler gestures during the Premier League match between Everton FC and Brighton & Hove Albion FC at Goodison Park on August 17, 2024 in Liverpool, England. (Photo by Chris Brunskill/Fantasista/Getty Images)

Will Seagulls continue to soar?

I'd be lying if I said there were no doubts about Brighton coming into this season.

With Roberto de Zerbi leaving for Marseille and a new 31-year-old boss in Fabian Hurzeler coming through the door, no one could predict how they would fare in the opening weekend.

Well, they shut up some critics very quickly.

The Seagulls got off to a flying start last Saturday with a romping 3-0 victory away at Everton.

Some of the football on display was spellbinding, Kaoru Mitoma was back scoring goals, and they looked strong at the back.

If they play anything close to like they did at Goodison Park today, Manchester United are in for a troubling afternoon.

Can the Seagulls continue to soar, or will United clip their wings?

Soggy south coast

Summer already seems like it's over...

Brighton is certainly not a a sight for sore eyes right now, it's looking rather wet and solum.

Hoods are up, rain is lashing down, and the sky is grey. Very different weather to the opening weekend.

It doesn't look like the weather is really going to improve, either.

Clash on the coast

Back already?

This past week has flown by, it's tough to believe we are already on the second round of Premier League fixtures.

Right, let's get cracking!
