A man has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing his father several times during a family dispute.

Robert Hillemacher, 84, was allegedly stabbed to death at a house on Foote Street in Brighton, south-east Melbourne, about 8.30pm on Friday.

Emergency services attempted to perform CPR, however he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His 52-year-old son, Anton Hillemacher, was arrested before he was charged on Sunday with murder, breach of an intervention order and aggravated burglary.

He was remanded and faced Melbourne Magistrates' Court later that night but the matter was adjourned until October 28 for a committal hearing.

A social media post - believed to be written by Hillemacher - said he had previously been living with his father, the Herald Sun reported.

He added that he had since been sleeping on his younger brother's couch in recent weeks.

Two of his brothers are understood to have been travelling overseas on holiday when the news broke of their father's death.
