When David Wagner returned to English football to take over a faltering Norwich City in January, he was supposed to be the man to help them bounce back to the Premier League.
But just before the hour mark at Ashton Gate, he seemed to be on the brink of losing his job with the German on course for his 20th defeat in 43 games at the hands of a new-look Bristol City under Liam Manning.
However, a stunning fightback from Norwich saved Wagner’s blushes with Adam Idah outmuscling Zak Vyner to tuck home a dramatic winner in the 95th minute.
Wagner charged down the touchline - Jose Mourinho-esque - to celebrate with his players and was somewhere at the bottom of a team bundle amid ecstatic scenes.
The Norwich supporters serenaded their team at full time after the 2-1 victory and Wagner must hope this is the result that really kickstarts their season.
Adam Idah's dramatic 95th minute winner helped Norwich City beat Bristol City 2-1
The win will be a huge moment of relief from David Wagner's side who were struggling
‘It meant a great deal to all of us,’ Wagner said post-match. 'I’ve been getting questions about me for six weeks and I don’t like to answer about me.

‘We have to pay credit to the players. The dressing room is full of good characters who I trust and believe in.’
George Tanner had earlier inadvertently tucked Dimitris Giannoulis’ cross past Max O’Leary into his own net to cancel out Jason Knight’s first half opener for the hosts.
The under pressure Wagner - who was on the receiving end of angry chants during Tuesday’s defeat to Watford - had further attracted the ire of Norwich fans ahead of kick off when he selected Kenny McLean out of position at centre back, but it looked to be a shrewd move.
They seemed anything but a team short of confidence by forcing a succession of early corners, with Jack Stacey and Ashely Barnes going close.
Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Sara was running the show but when Onel Hernandez hit the post after good work from Jonathan Rowe, the hosts burst into life.
Taylor Gardner-Hickman - the Robins’ Player of the Month for November - forced Angus Gunn into one of three fine first half saves, before Knight broke the deadlock.
Gunn parried a sharp George Tanner cross into the danger zone and Knight was there to fire home for his first league goal for the club.
Tommy Conway and Knight had golden chances to double the lead but Gunn pulled off two sprawling stops.
The Norwich supporters ironically began to chant ‘it’s all our fault’ - perhaps in response to joint-owner Delia Smith claiming this week 20 per cent of the fanbase are ‘whingers’.
Their side did come out fighting in the second half, before a lunging Tanner suffered the ignominy of putting one past his own keeper.
The more mobile Idah replaced Ashley Barnes for Norwich to stretch the line although it was the hosts who looked more like winning the game.
But when Idah latched onto a ball over the top and held off Vyner, he ensured Norwich would snatch the points with the last kick of the game.
‘I'm still scratching my head how we lost,’ Manning said. ‘We’ve come away with nothing and the bare minimum we should've come away with is a point given the control we had for 70 minutes.’
A reflective Wagner added: 'We live in a world where everyone likes to have something quicker, faster and better. My job is to calm everyone down, focus on day-to-day work and find out what we can improve.'
