A five-year-old boy has died after falling into a swimming pool while on his first holiday in Egypt.

Kelan Logan-Derench, from Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, was said to have had a 'tragic accident' and fell into the pool, just a day after arriving with his mum, elder sister and grandmother on Friday.

Kelan was in year one at New Hall Primary School, according to local councillors. He was described as a 'cheeky, mischievous, happy' boy. His family are said to be 'absolutely broken'.

Kelan was about to become a big brother in February.

A GoFundMe, set up by Serena Whitehead, a friend of Kelan's mother, has raised more than £12,000 of the £15,000 goal to bring his body home and pay for his funeral costs.

Kelan Logan-Derench, from Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham , was said to have had a 'tragic accident' and fell into the pool, just a day after arriving with his mum, elder sister and grandmother on Friday

The appeal said: 'Five-year-old Kelan Logan-Derench, from Sutton Coldfield, went on his first holiday abroad to Egypt on 24/11/2023 with his mum, elder sister and nan. Devastatingly only one day later Kelan had a tragic accident and fell into the swimming pool and heartbreakingly nothing could be done to save him and he sadly lost his life.

'Kelan was a cheeky, mischievous, happy little boy, he was a younger brother to Cienna and was about to become a big brother himself in February 2024. Kelan's whole family are absolutely broken and we can only imagine the pain they are going through, the least we can do as friends of the family and as a community is to help them by offering some financial support so that they can bring Kelan home and give him the funeral he deserves.

Councillor Richard Parkin wrote on Facebook: 'My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to Kelan's mom, family and friends for their tragic loss.'

This is a breaking news story. More to follow.
