A man has been charged with murder over the fatal stabbing of a homeless man in Melbourne's north.

Police arrested the 42-year-old from Broadmeadows on Tuesday afternoon after they were called to a stabbing on Warnock Street in the suburb about 2pm.

They found a 32-year-old man, of no fixed address, dead outside a property.

Officers believe the alleged murderer and victim knew each other.

The 42-year-old was remanded in custody to face Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Victoria Police homicide squad detectives charged him with murder.

Another four people were found dead at a home at Broadmeadows on Tuesday in an unrelated incident.

Investigators are considering whether drug overdoses and carbon monoxide poisoning were involved.

A relative found the four people - three males aged 37, 32 and 17, and a 42-year-old woman - dead on Tuesday morning.

There was no suggestion violence led to their deaths.
