Candice Warner hit Mitchell Johnson with a cutting one-word response after her husband David did his talking at the crease amid a barrage of criticism.

Candice, 37, has never shirked from standing up to David's former teammate Johnson before, with the pair engaged in a war of words earlier this year over the opener's form for Australia.

Ahead of the first Test against Pakistan in Perth, Johnson ramped up his criticism of the veteran, claiming he is undeserving of a farewell party this summer due to his terrible performances as well as his role in the sandpaper scandal.

But David silenced Johnson in the best way possible after putting runs on the board against Pakistan, with his century on the opening day at Optus Stadium putting Pat Cummins' side in a strong position.

And unsurprisingly Candice took the opportunity to aim a swipe at Johnson on X - formerly known as Twitter.

She simply posted the 'shush' emoji in a direct jibe at the former fast bowler.

David let out a roar of emotion as he passed triple figures, and sent a message of his own to Johnson and any other critic at the tea break.

'There is going to be criticism, but you have got to take that and there is no better way to silence it than to put runs on the board,' he told Adam Gilchrist.

Warner received support from an unlikely source ahead of Thursday's opening day, with England legend Michael Vaughan defending the opener.

'He's one of the greats. I don't understand why people aren't talking about him being a great player,' Vaughan told Fox Cricket.

'The fact he has made mistakes in the past, I guess, there's friction there with him and a few ex-players (and) I guess there's friction there with him and a few Aussie supporters.

'(But) if you actually put all that to one side and look at his numbers, he's only had one blip and that's his batting in England against Stuart Broad around the wicket.
