A family has had a lucky escape after a P-plate driver ploughed his car through their back fence and into their pool - just metres away from where they were sleeping.

The 17-year-old driver was travelling with another teenage passenger in Preston, in Sydney's southwest, just after 10pm on Friday when he lost control and veered off the road.

Shocking CCTV captured the hatchback careening into the backyard of a family's home, smashing the fence and landing in the pool.

The two teenagers were able to scramble out of the car before it sunk, while the family inside the home who were asleep in rooms beside the pool also escaped injury.

Neighbour, Lakshmi Anand, said the owner of the home had been left rattled by the accident.

'The lady was shaken when I spoke to her yesterday, she was shaken a bit and we did try to calm her down,' Ms Anand told Nine News.

'Because it was dark and it was wet I think he (the driver) lost control and went straight in.

'He probably would be shaken as well.'

The family who own the property are now tasked with organising a crane to remove the car from their pool.

The back fence will also need to be repaired.

NSW Police are investigating whether speed was a factor in the crash.
