He immediately knows a Sancerre from a Sauvignon and sells eye-wateringly expensive vintages – but even this expert enjoys a supermarket wine.

Joel Bastian, recently declared Scotland’s best sommelier, is originally from Alsace in France, and is head of wine for the restaurant group founded by Scots chef Tom Kitchin. It includes the Michelin-starred The Kitchin in Edinburgh.

But despite compiling a luxurious wine list featuring bottles costing upwards of £3,000, Mr Bastian also has tips when it comes to supermarket plonk. His choice from the aisles? A bottle of rosé costing just £8.50 in Tesco.

EXPERT’S CHOICE: Joel Bastian and the £8.50 Tesco La Vieille Ferme rosé he loves

He said: ‘On a late summer evening a glass of La Vieille Ferme rosé is a very simple, quaffable rosé from the Lubéron region of France – it’s very enjoyable for a supermarket wine.’

Mr Bastian was named in this year’s Sommelier Edit Magazine’s top 100, taking fifth place and the highest ranking in Scotland.

He said that making the list was a surprise and a privilege.

‘My role is something I am really passionate about and I enjoy discovering new things in the world of wine,’ he said. ‘It’s nice to be recognised and always good to be able to champion Scotland’s food and drink scene.’

The tasting menu at The Kitchin is renowned for its paired wines, chosen by the head sommelier to perfectly complement the dish.

Mr Bastian said: ‘We have been fortunate over the years to serve some very rare bottles of wine such as over a hundred years old bottles of prestigious Bordeaux estates, which creates a great buzz in my team and is something that not everyone gets to experience.’

Sommeliers Sumith Alahakoon of Sushisamba, Stuart Skea at Michelin-starred Lyla and John Power of the Witchery, Prestonfield House and Rhubarb – all in Edinburgh – were also among the top ten.
