Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson will miss the rest of the NFL season because he requires surgery on his throwing shoulder.

The 28-year-old, who moved to Cleveland in 2022 on an unprecedented $230million contract, had an MRI scan on Monday on two injuries sustained during the Browns' win over the Ravens.

In addition to an ankle problem, Watson felt a 'new discomfort in his right shoulder after a hit in the first half'.

The MRI revealed he had broken a bone and on Wednesday the team confirmed that the problem 'will require immediate surgical repair to avoid further structural damage.'

Watson played through the problem on Sunday, leading the Browns to a brilliant comeback win in Baltimore.

It was only after the game that he alerted medical staff to the issue with his right shoulder, with the MRI confirming he had suffered 'a displaced fracture to the glenoid'.

A statement from the Browns read: 'Deshaun Watson underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) Monday on two injuries sustained on different plays in the first half of Sunday's 33-31 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

'Imaging on his left ankle revealed a high-ankle sprain. In addition, postgame, Deshaun notified our medical staff of a new discomfort in his right shoulder revealed a displaced fracture to the glenoid.

'Despite performing at a high level and finishing the game, after consultation with Browns' head physician, James Voos, MD, and industry-leading shoulder specialist, Neal AlAttrache, MD, it has been determined that this injury will require immediate surgical repair to avoid further structural damage.

'Deshaun will be placed on season-ending injured reserve and a full recovery is expected for the start of the 2024 season.'
