The announcer tasked with calling Eastern Michigan games has slammed suggestions he will lose his job after the team recruited Noah Knigga.

But Tom Helmer still slightly botched the linebacker's name when defending himself.

The 6ft 2ins Knigga committed to Eastern Michigan earlier this month. He went viral a few months ago, due to his eye-catching last name which could sound like an offensive racial slur if pronounced wrongly.

Knigga cleared up how to pronounce his name in an interview with former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III back in January.  'It's Kuh-nay-guh,' he said.

But that has not stopped fans on social media from spreading jokes and memes at Knigga's expense after the three-star linebacker's commitment.

Tom Helmer said: 'My pronunciation skills this season will be the best in the nation, bar none'

'RIP Eastern Michigan broadcasters,' one account wrote on X, formerly Twitter, in response to news of Knigga's decision.

Helmer, the Eastern Michigan Eagles play-by-play caller, hit back, insisting: 'Some people seem to have very little faith in me'

On his Hooked on Helmets TikTok channel, the announcer continued:  'The jokes have been flying online about this player’s last name.

'He recently committed to play football at Eastern Michigan, and people are joking that his name is going to get a broadcaster fired.'

He added: 'My pronunciation skills this season will be the best in the nation, bar none.'

Helmer then sought to clear up any lingering confusion about Knigga's name, only to slightly misspeak. 'The proper pronunciation of his name is Noah Kuh-nig-uh.'
