A couple have been rushed to hospital with burns after a barbecue exploded at a Bunnings sausage sizzle on the Easter weekend.

It's understood the husband was injured while pulling his wife to safety after flames erupted at an Adelaide Bunnings at about 12.30pm on Saturday.

The woman was rushed to Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious burns to her face while her husband was treated for minor burns.

Footage from the Bunnings carpark showed thick smoke pouring from the barbecue as shocked shoppers and staff members ran to safety.

A nearby car was also destroyed by the intense flames.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, it's believed it was sparked after a gas bottle was knocked over by a staff member.

Ernie, who witnessed the fire, said a woman working behind the barbecue had fainted, falling and knocking the gas bottle over.

'She fell on the floor, and next minute it went boom,' he told 9News

In a statement, Bunnings said staff members and a customer had used nearby extinguishers to contain the fire.

Police will continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
