Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Another chance comes and goes for the visitors, they are really starting to stack up now.

Dominik Szoboszlai fancies his chances and has a pop from outside the box, but it's an easy shot for Dean Henderson to handle.

'That will wake up Selhurst Park'

By Lewis Steele At Selhurst Park

That might wake up the Selhurst Park crowd a bit. Liverpool need to kill this game off or they will rue the missed chances.

BIG SAVE! Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Alisson to the rescue!

Crystal Palace nearly make Liverpool pay for their missed chances as Eddie Nketiah gets the ball in space in the area.

He arrows the ball toward goal with power but the Brazilian keeper does well to beat it away.

BIG CHANCE! Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Another chance goes begging!

It's Diogo Jota again as he heads wide in acres of space from the Trent Alexander-Arnold free-kick.

He really should score. How he doesn't have a hat-trick today, I'll never know.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

More ironic cheers, that's what we love to see. well, not if you're a Crystal Palace fan as they have just given a foul away.

Mo Salah shows strength to hold off Trevoh Chalobah before winning a free-kick in a dangerous area outside the box.

Trent Alexander-Arnold will step up...

SUBSTITUTION: Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Oliver Glasner has finally seen enough, he's turning to the bench.

The German is making a double change with Jean-Philippe Mateta and Will Hughes entering the action.

Tyrick Mitchell and Adam Wharton are the players to make way.

BIG SAVE! Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Oh, it should be 2-0!

Virgil van Dijk clips a lovely ball over the top to Mo Salah in the box and you just expect the winger to score.

But instead of volleying it first time, he takes a touch before hitting the ball straight at Dean Henderson.

Could the Reds rue these missed chances?

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Why did no one shoot there?

Liverpool pass the ball around the Crystal Palace box and carve up an opening with each one.

For some reason, though, not a single player decides to have a pop.

Sometimes you just need to pull the trigger and see what happens.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

That cross from Tyrick Mitchell sums up this Crystal Palace performance, so far.

He is free on the right and tries to whip it into a dangerous area, but instead skews it over the bar.

As he walks away, Mitchell shakes his head and looks to the floor.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

The ironic cheers are back, this time from the Liverpool away end.

They come after Diogo Jota is hacked down in his own half following an interception.

I'll be honest, I'm not sure why the Reds fans are cheering like that... but I love it.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

It's obviously not an injury as Alexis Mac Allister has taken a seat on the bench.

He doesn't look best pleased. I mean, I'm pretty sure most players would feel the same if they had been taken off at half-time.

SECOND HALF: Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Oooh, this is interesting...

Alexis Mac Allister has not come out for the second half. Is that due to injury, or the fact that he was on a yellow card?

He is replaced by Dominik Szoboszlai, who ain't half bad, is he?

Anyway, we are now back underway in south London.

Gravenberch shining... again

By Harry Bamforth

I would normally wait until full-time to write a post like this, but I feel that 45 minutes from Ryan Gravenberch justifies some praise.

I sound like a broken record, but the Dutchman has been utterly superb at the base of the Liverpool midfield again.

He's been strong, direct, and has driven the Reds forward at every opportunity. Palace have not been able to cope.

The way Gravenberch manages to turn players is such a joy to watch, his confidence is sky-high.

He just makes this Reds side tick.

'Palace look awful'

By Lewis Steele At Selhurst Park

Hard to believe Crystal Palace put together the run they did at the end of last season. I know they've lost Michael Olise and Joachim Andersen but they look awful here. Liverpool haven't needed to get out of second gear yet.

Good omens for the Reds...

By Harry Bamforth

When Liverpool take the lead, they rarely relinquish it.

In fact, when scoring the opening goal in the Premier League this season, the Reds have gone on to win all five of their matches.

The same can't be said about Crystal Palace, in terms of coming from behind.

They are yet to win when conceding the opening goal in the Premier League this season, managing only two draws, while losing the other two occasions.

Good signs for Liverpool, not for Palace.

WATCH: Jota opens the scoring

By Harry Bamforth

What a move this was.

If you haven't seen how Liverpool took the lead in that first half, now is your time to find out.

The finish was clinical, and the build-up was brilliant. Liverpool at their very best.

Liverpool fans, enjoy.

HALF-TIME: Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

There goes the whistle to signal the interval.

Bar the opening 30 seconds, and the final 30 seconds, Crystal Palace have not been at the races.

Liverpool have though, and Diogo Jota's early strike sees them lead in south London.

They could easily have more, but Arne Slot will still be a happy man.

CHANCE! Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Yes, they can.

Suddenly the hosts have a little bit of confidence and Ismail Sarr drives a fine strike toward the bottom left-hand corner.

For a second, it looks destined for the net, but Alisson manages to get a hand to it and then smother the rebound.

Much better from the hosts.

TWO added minutes

By Harry Bamforth

The board has gone up and there will be two minutes of stoppage time.

Can Crystal Palace cause problems just before the break?

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Kostas Tsimikas, that is superb.

Ismaila Sarr chests the ball down in the area but before he can unload a strike, Tsimikas gets his body in the way and manages to usher the ball out for a goal kick.

I didn't know the Greek was that strong... I do now.

YELLOW CARD: Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool (Mac Allister)

By Harry Bamforth

Alexis Mac Allister has now been shown a yellow for trying to halt a Crystal Palace counter-attack.

This time, there are no ironic jeers from the stands. A shame, I love it when they do that.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Kostas Tsimikas has been at Liverpool for four years and is still yet to score for the club.

So, when the ball rolls to him outside the box he should probably opt for the cross.

But no, he tries to blast it into the top corner, and it's blocked.

CHANCE! Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

This goal feels like it's coming, it really does.

Liverpool's corners have left a little to be desired, so far today, but they nearly nail this one.

The ball lands on the head of Virgil van Dijk in loads of space, but he can't keep his effort on target.

Should do better.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

If this was a boxing match, Liverpool's face wouldn't even have a bruise on it.

Meanwhile, Palace would be bloodied and battered.

The hosts are still on their feet, though, it's only 1-0. They just need to find a way out from this Liverpool pressure.

'Should be 2-0'

By Lewis Steele At Selhurst Park

Arguably should be 2-0, looked a big chance from up here.

BIG MISS! Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Diogo Jota, how have you not scored??

I was about to click the goal button as the ball rolled into the forward in acres of space in the area.

You just expect the net to bulge but he miscues his strike completely. I can't believe he's missed.

A huge let-off for Crystal Palace.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Finally, there is some positive support from the Crystal Palace fans.

Their side finally foray up the pitch and win a corner following a free-kick.

Unfortunately, it leads to nothing.

YELLOW CARD: Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool (Gakpo)

By Harry Bamforth

We have our first booking of the game and it is handed to Cody Gakpo.

There is a chorus of 'wheyyy' from the home support - easily pleased.

CHANCE! Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

The Crystal Palace fans are getting extremely agitated now, and it's clear to see why.

Adam Wharton gives the ball away outside the area and Trent Alexander-Arnold nearly makes him pay with a thunderous low drive.

But Dean Henderson is equal to it and Palace should get it clear... or not, for some reason Nathaniel Clyne allows it to run out for a corner.

Very odd. You're not in a Reds shirt, Nathaniel.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

While I have been eulogising about Liverpool, their final pass has not always been the best.

Alexis Mac Allister is in acres of space outside the box and has two options - Mo Salah on the right and Diogo Jota on the left.

He chooses the wrong option, goes for Jota, and the attack ends with Cody Gakpo blasting over.

If he had slid in Salah, the winger would have been in.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Liverpool's one-touch football is simply sublime.

They up the pace a notch more and work their way into the penalty area and Crystal Palace panic.

The ball looks set to fall for Diogo Jota but somehow the hosts scramble it away for a corner.

The resulting set-piece is pretty rubbish.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Cody Gakpo has been extremely impressive so far down the left.

He gets in again, cuts back, and then bends a teasing ball to the back post for Mo Salah to attack.

But the Egyptian's height inhibits him and he can't jump high enough to get his head on it.

If only he still had his afro.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Crystal Palace just can't keep the ball.

Every time they manage to wrestle it back off the visitors, they try to launch a counter and end up giving it straight back.

Liverpool are in full control.

SUBSTITUTION: Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Oh dear...

Crystal Palace's nightmare start to this match has just got even worse.

Daniel Munoz has picked up a knock and he can't continue, he is replaced by former Red Nathaniel Clyne.

Things can only improve from here, right?

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

The Liverpool forwards are having a field day at the moment.

Mo Salah is in acres of space down the right and just has to find Alexis Mac Allister in the area.

But the midfielder can't get to his low cross and the hosts manage to hook it clear.

The Reds are all over Crystal Palace.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

That goal has sucked the life out of Selhurst Park.

Apart from a bit of drumming from the home fans, all you can hear is the Liverpool support singing their hearts out.

After an early scare, Liverpool are now showing what they are all about under Arne Slot.

Goal:Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool (Jota 9')

By Harry Bamforth

That is Slot-ball at its very best!

Liverpool hit Crystal Palace where it hurts with their first real attack of this match.

They suddenly press the accelerator and Cody Gakpo spots Diogo Jota in the box, who drifts into the six-yard box to prod home.

So slick, so clinical.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Crystal Palace have started really brightly here.

They try and catch Liverpool out on the counter-attack and Eberechi Eze finds Daniel Munoz on the right-hand side of the area.

The full-back drives to the byline, but his low cross is put behind for a corner.

The resulting set-piece comes to nothing.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

It's been a breathless start here in south London.

That disallowed goal has not shaken Liverpool, they press forward in numbers in response.

This has the making of an incredible game already.

DISALLOWED GOAL - Crystal Palace

By Harry Bamforth

Oh my word...

Crystal Palace think they get the perfect start inside 30 seconds as Eddie Nketiah prods home from close range.

But the flag is up to halt the celebrations.

He was miles offside, but what a slick move that is from the hosts, like a knife through butter.

KICK-OFF: Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

The techno music is still going!

The speakers are ramped up to full blast in the final moments as the teams take to their positions.

Then as it fades out there is a huge roar, and away we go.

Here come the teams!

By Harry Bamforth

We are nearly there...

The teams are out of the tunnel which sadly means we have to listen to the Premier League anthem.

If you know me, you'll know I am not a fan of the tune.

Thankfully, it's only short, and now the teams are in their huddles, I'm sure there is lots of motivating being done.

'Apprehensive home support'

By Sami Mokbel At Selhurst Park

An apprehensive atmosphere here from the home supporters. A poor start to the season following the blistering end to last’s has created angst here at Selhurst Park. The fact they are playing leaders Liverpool hardly eases their early-season concerns. Let’s see...

'Atmosphere building'

By Lewis Steele At Selhurst Park

The atmosphere is building here in South London with some techno music blaring through the speakers — and you can just about hear the away end giving the eagle mascots some stick in the far corner.
It’s a lovely, sunny day so let’s hope the game lives up to expectations. Former Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew is in the house.

Salah chasing Fowler

By Harry Bamforth

Mo Salah has been on fire this season.

He has already been involved in eight Premier League goals this campaign, with four goals and four assists.

If the winger nets a brace today, he will equal Robbie Fowler's total of 163 Premier League goals.

I wouldn't bet against him doing it... he loves a goal at Selhurst Park.

STAT PACK: Crystal Palace vs Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

It's time for the weekly Squakwa stat pack.

On first viewing, it's clear to see that Liverpool have had the better of this fixture during the Premier League era.

Crystal Palace have only won six of their 30 league meetings with Liverpool since 1992.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have won nearly two-thirds of the clashes...

Away day kings

By Harry Bamforth

Liverpool are loving life on the road at the moment.

If they were a band, the Reds would want to be on tour constantly. They are tearing it up away from home this season.

Four games played, four wins, 10 goals scored, and just two conceded.

Not bad, eh?

Kick-off closing in...

By Harry Bamforth

Kick-off is creeping up fast, my word.

We are now under 20 minutes from the whistle being blown at Selhurst Park and the players are going through their final preparations.

There aren't many, if any, smiling faces out there. Everyone is fully focused on the task ahead.

I mean, it would be nice to see some happier lads out there, but beggars can't be choosers.

Glasner: 'No one expects us to win'

By Harry Bamforth

Oliver Glasner, Crystal Palace manager, on TNT Sports:

We want to play against Liverpool, we want to compete with the best teams and we want to get our first win. Today no one expects us to get three points but we want it and it's an opportunity for us to get a win. I’m really convinced the team will give everything they have and we will see.
Ismaila [Sarr] had very good performances when he came into the game and always had a positive impact. He has a lot of pace and we expect Liverpool to play with dominance and aggression, so there will be space in behind and this is one of the strengths of Ismaila Sarr and we hope that he can find and use this space and score goals.

Back in April...

By Harry Bamforth

Liverpool fans, you may want to look away...

Back in April, the Reds were level on points at the top of the Premier League with just seven games to go. Jurgen Klopp's dream ending was still a possibility.

But then Crystal Palace came to town...

In the space of just 90 minutes, Liverpool's title hopes were left in tatters courtesy of Eberechi Eze.

It proved to be a historic win for the Eagles at Anfield and also spelled the end of a fairytale ending to Klopp's tenure.

Six months on, can the Eagles hand such a blow to new boss Arne Slot?

By Harry Bamforth

South London is looking lovely today, it really is.

The sun is shining, the fans are arriving, and the pitch is looking pristine. A beautiful day for it.

I wonder how many fans are wearing a thousand layers in expectation that it was going to be cold.

For anyone who is, I would advise taking them off. It's fairly warm at Selhurst Park.

Gravenberch becoming the darling of the Kop

By Harry Bamforth

Excited to see this man in action again, Liverpool fans?

It's fair to say, Ryan Gravenberch's rapid improvement under Arne Slot has raised eyebrows across the Premier League, and beyond.

To put it simply, the Dutchman has been brilliant.

Once again, Gravenberch starts in the holding midfield role at Selhurst Park, where he has shone at the start of this season.

Before you all watch him in action again, why not read this piece by our very own Lewis Steele?

He looks at the statistics that display just how well Gravenberch has adapted to his new position.

Can Eagles soar once more?

By Harry Bamforth

Let's be honest, it's not been the best start to the season for Crystal Palace, has it?

After the way the Eagles ended the 2023-24 campaign under Oliver Glasner, many of us believed they would kick on after a whole pre-season under the German.

Well, that hasn't happened.

They currently sit in the bottom three on just three points, without a win in their opening six matches.

Compare that to last season where they went unbeaten in their final seven games, winning six of those, including the historic victory at Anfield.

Surely that form will return soon, right?

I mean, this side is just too good to be lurking around the bottom, it has to click at some point.

Palace fans will be hoping it does today.

Slot: 'Important not to get the crowd going'

By Harry Bamforth

Arne Slot, Liverpool boss, speaking on TNT Sports:

We do a lot of things well but if we want to compete with tougher opponents we need to find another gear. I can come up with so many things that we can improve, which is normal.
We have played a lot of games, so it's a good moment for Curtis to start because he is not going on international duty. Dom [Szoboszlai] is putting in so much effort in his pressing, it's good for us to have more than three midfielders.

On the Selhurst Park atmosphere:

Every away game everywhere around the world is difficult. If they get a half chance, supporters will bring energy to the game - you feel that. It's important not to get the crowd going. We need to force them to make mistakes and it helps to not let the crowd be as loud as they can be.

'Slot has listened to the fans'

By Lewis Steele At Selhurst Park

Arne Slot has listened to the fans and made four changes. Some supporters were worried about the lack of rotation so he has answered their call by leaving out Darwin Nunez, Andy Robertson, Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz.
That sees Curtis Jones and Kostas Tsimikas make rare league starts, while Diogo Jota returns and Cody Gakpo gets his chance. Sub keeper Caoimhin Kelleher is not on the bench and it is believed he is ill. No sign of Federico Chiesa, either, as the Italian is still nursing an injury.

Liverpool's love of Selhurst

By Harry Bamforth

It's fair to say, Liverpool love it at Selhurst Park.

In my head, I have always seen it as a bogey ground for the Reds, they always seem to struggle there in my memory.

This statistic says otherwise...

Liverpool have won eight of their last nine visits to Selhurst Park in the Premier League. They drew the other in 2022-23.

This record tells me that this afternoon should go only one way, but runs have to come to an end at some point.

Will the streak continue?

Jones returns

By Harry Bamforth

It's a big day for this man, isn't it?

Liverpool's midfield has been pretty much set in stone all season with Dominik Szoboszlai in centre-attacking midfield.

Well, today Arne Slot has decided to entrust Curtis Jones with that role.

It's his first Premier League start under the Dutchman and he will be desperate to impress.

After his performance in the cup against West Ham two weeks ago, his confidence will certainly be high.

Can he deliver again?

Arne Slot is switching things up!

The Liverpool boss has made three changes from the side that put Wolves to the sword last weekend.

Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones, and Kostas Tsimikas come into the starting 11.

Diogo Jota also returns to start after a cameo in midweek following a slight knock.

Crystal Palace Team News - Chalobah STARTS

We have our answer!

Trevoh Chalobah comes straight into the Crystal Palace starting 11 to make his debut.

The defender comes in as one of two changes to the side that lost against Liverpool's Merseyside rivals Everton last weekend.

Ismaila Sarr returns to the line-up in place of Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Trevoh's time?

By Harry Bamforth

Crystal Palace fans are yet to see Trevoh Chalobah pull on their colours after signing in the summer on loan.

That may change today, though.

The defender has recovered from injury to make today's matchday squad, and we could see him get his first minutes at Selhurst Park.

Will he start, or will he be on the bench?

You only have to wait a few more minutes to find out the answer.

Leaders in London

By Harry Bamforth

What a season Liverpool are having so far, eh?

When Arne Slot took control of the reins at Anfield, nobody knew what to expect from this Liverpool side.

Well, six games in and we have our answer.

The Reds sit top of the league and have won five of their opening six matches, including all three on the road.

Today they face a Crystal palace side who are yet to pick up three points this season. They have been extremely underwhelming.

So, on paper, surely Liverpool will win?

Football isn't played on paper, though. Palace have already shown this year that they know how to stifle the Reds.

It's going to be interesting to see how this one plays out...

Sunny Selhurst calling

By Harry Bamforth

Oh, what a beautiful day!

I thought the time of sunny lunchtime kick-offs were behind us after the weather change we have endured this week.

But no, Selhurst Park is bathed in sunshine as Crystal Palace prepare to host Premier League leaders Liverpool.

When these two sides meet it is very rarely a snooze-fest (cue a 0-0 draw). Palace and the Reds have had some historic battles over the years.

Let's hope we witness another one today, it would be the perfect way to start off a stacked weekend of footie.

Right then, I think we should get this show on the road, don't you?
