Gold Coast star David Fifita has sensationally backflipped on his deal to defect to the Roosters in a megabucks four-year deal.

On Wednesday morning the Titans announced the 24-year-old will remain with the club until the end of 2026.

'The Gold Coast Titans can confirm David Fifita will remain at the club beyond 2024 and have approved his request to activate his player option for the next two seasons,' the club said in a statement.

'This will result in Fifita remaining part of the Gold Coast squad until the end of 2026.'

Fifita (pictured) was due to shift to the Roosters from next year, but the Bondi club revealed the forward had 'doubts' about his decision and the megabucks offer has now been withdrawn

Titans fans thought the back rower's four-year, $3.3million deal with the Chooks was done - but now it appears he's happy to stay on the Glitter Strip

'I’m extremely grateful for the time and interest shown in me over the past two weeks, but upon further reflection, I have made the decision that I want to remain a Titan beyond 2024,' Fifita said.

'I’m excited about the direction the team is taking and being close to home, and my family has been central to helping me make this decision.'

The Roosters confirmed the move, saying the club has withdrawn the offer to Fifita.

'Despite his management making the initial approach to the Club and Fifita personally informing the Sydney Roosters’ Chairman and Head Coach of his intent to join the Club last Thursday, Fifita has since expressed doubt about his decision,' the Roosters announced on their website.

'Consequently, the Club has elected to withdraw its offer with view that it is in the Roosters’ best interests. The Club wishes Fifita all the best.'

Fifita said his family was 'central' to him making the bombshell backflip. He has strong ties to the Gold Coast, having gone to high school in the area

Fifita was to join the Tricolours on a four-year, $3.3million deal, but the Titans have taken advantage of an NRL rule that gives clubs a window in which they can try to convince a star to stay.

Billionaire Roosters supremo Nick Politis was reportedly involved in getting the Tongan international and former Broncos star to make the switch to Bondi Junction.

The announcement of his signing led to Roosters star Angus Crichton launching a broadside at the club as he said he would not play second fiddle to Fifita.

Off contract at season's end, Crichton labelled the Roosters' decision to sign Fifita as 'interesting' and admitted it left him wondering about the club's thinking.

The 28-year-old also admitted he was unsure if both he and Fifita could fit into the same team, given both are attacking threats as left-side second-rowers.

'I don't want to be sitting behind anyone,' he said.

'If there's an opportunity that makes sense (elsewhere), then I'll definitely look at it.

'I'm not going to rush it, especially with the Fifita stuff that's come out now.

'That's a good enough reason for me to take my time, and make smart decisions.'

As of Monday, Crichton said he was yet to hear from the club what Fifita's arrival meant for him.

'I probably won't go looking for him (Robinson), but if he wants to talk to me he knows where to find me,' Crichton said.

'It does make you question where their head's at.'

Fifita broke into the NRL with the Broncos in 2018, playing 44 games for Brisbane before switching to the Titans on a three-year deal in 2021.

He attended famous footy nursery Keebra Park High School on the Gold Coast, has played eight Origin games for Queensland and and represented Tonga in four Tests.
