Delta Airlines is now serving only pasta to international travelers after a plane made an emergency landing when passengers fell sick due to moldy food.

The carrier said it was slashing meal choices on 75 international incidents 'out of an abundance of caution' and has ordered staff to examine dishes before serving them.

It comes after a flight from Detroit to Amsterdam was forced to divert to New York's JFK Airport after about 24 people fell ill due to food contamination on July 3.

One passenger told DailyMail.com that travelers had been served moldy chicken - which had also been consumed by both pilots.

On Wednesday and Thursday this week global travelers in economy seats were offered only a pasta option for their in-flight meal.

Delta Flight 136 was took off from Detroit towards Amsterdam, The Netherlands when it was forced to divert to New York's JFK Airport after about 24 people fell ill due to food contamination on July 3

According to NBC, the meal change was immediately implemented on 75 international flights on Wednesday and Thursday.

DailyMail.com reached out to Delta to clarify how long it would last.

It comes after the airline issued an apology to all customers and said that they are investigating the incident.

Delta Corporate Communications Spokesperson Lisa Hanna said: 'Out of an abundance of caution, Delta teams have proactively adjusted our in-flight meal service on a number of international flights.

'This is not the service Delta is known for and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay in their travels.'

Ash Dhokte, a VP responsible for onboard services, added these incidents are 'extremely rare' and asked staff to 'please examine the dish before serving it and do not serve any food that may have a contaminant'.

Dhokte also said in the staff note: 'Gate Gourmet caters for us at 19 domestic stations and we are reviewing strategies to limit disruptions for you and our customers should an interruption occur,' according to CNBC

Delta has also issued an apology to all customers and said that they are investigating the incident

The flight landed safely at JFK around 4am Wednesday, where passengers and crew were met by medics

The disruption came as millions took to America's skies for one of the busiest travel days of the year.

TSA previously warned that 32million will fly this week for the Independence Day holiday week J, piling the strain on an already stretched aviation industry.

DailyMail.com also LSG Sky Chefs, which provides Delta's meal services, for comment.
