Devin Haney passed his 140-pound division debut with flying colors by defeating Regis Prograis for the WBC super lightweight title via unanimous decision in front of his hometown San Francisco, California on Saturday.

Haney swept Prograis, 120-107, across all three scorecards, including a 10-8-round courtesy of a knockdown in the third.

'I went in here and I hit him with a sharp right hand,' Haney said. 'I capitalized on his tendency of leaning in.'

After scoring his first knockdown in eight fights, Haney also stunned Prograis in the sixth and ninth rounds but remained disciplined, aware of his opponent's counter-punching ability. Haney said that his father and head coach Bill Haney urged him to stick to the game plan rather than chasing the finish.

'I wanted to go in there and I know I was getting him hurt,' Haney explained. 'My dad said stay focused, stick to the game plan.'

'His power did surprised me, I thought he was a soft puncher,' Prograis added.

After successfully announcing himself to the super lightweights, Haney and his team are yet to decide if they want to defend the title or move higher up in weight class.
