A recent photo of superstar Sam Kerr has fuelled speculation that the Matildas striker might have already secretly married fiancee Kristie Mewis.

The Chelsea star - who has been keeping a relatively low profile since being charged with allegedly racially abusing a police officer - took to Instagram on Sunday to show support for US women’s basketball star Caitlin Clark.

Kerr posted a series of photos of herself with Clark's Iowa Hawkeyes jersey - and in one photo displayed a shiny new piece of jewellery on her left ring finger.

The Aussie announced her engagement to long-term girlfriend Kristie Mewis last November, and has been spotted several times with a plain gold band on her ring finger since then.

However, the new ring features diamonds on the gold band, opening the door for speculation that the couple have tied the knot.

It's been a tough year for Kerr, who suffered a dreaded anterior cruciate ligament injury to her knee while at a training camp with Chelsea in January.

The shocking setback seems certain to stop her fulfilling her dream of playing for Australia at the Paris Olympics.

Last month, Australia's highest-profile footballer was charged with allegedly racially harassing a police officer during a night out in London.

The incident took place a day after Kerr scored a hat-trick in Chelsea's FA Cup win with Liverpool in January 2023 and she is set to face a criminal trial before a jury in February next year.

That was followed by the revelation that the revelation that the Chelsea star did not inform the Matildas or Football Australia of the charge, with the CEO of the code's governing body down under and national coach Tony Gustavsson explaining that they only found out when the Mail's exclusive report was published.

Both Mewis and Kerr have remained quiet since the news broke on March 5, refusing to make any official comment to their social media.

The footballing power couple met while they were both playing for competing clubs in the US league in 2019.

They spoke online for almost four months during the 2020 Covid lockdown before spending two weeks in quarantine together, where they quickly fell in love.

The pair continued their romance in the lead-up to the Olympics in 2021 where - following America's defeat of Australia in the semi-finals - they were photographed together.

Their on-pitch embrace made headlines as Kerr's break-up from her former longtime partner - another US club player, Nikki Stanton - had not yet become public.

Their cross-global romance has since been heavily documented on social media with both women amassing hundreds of thousands of followers.
