They are the undoubted yardstick of the NRL - but Panthers staff, players and fans were left cursing their luck on Friday following injuries to halfbacks Nathan Cleary and fill-in Brad Schneider.

While Cleary tweaking his hamstring could prove to be dire for the NSW Blues ahead of the State of Origin series opener on June 5, Penrith coach Ivan Cleary declared the 'show goes on.'

'He's pretty shattered actually, it's very disappointing for him. Obviously I'm torn between being his coach and his Dad right now,' the Panthers coach said in the post-match press conference.

'I thought in that first half he was really starting to come into his own. But yeah anyway, the show goes on.

Panthers superstar Nathan Cleary is tipped to be sidelined for a few weeks with a hamstring injury - he is also expected to miss the Origin series opener on June 5 with NSW

In a double blow for the Panthers, Brad Schneider was also injured in the NSW Cup curtain raiser, leaving the club without two halfbacks

Brad Schneider suffered a knee injury in NSW Cup yesterday - no other video angles but potential PCL sprain w nasty direct contact during kick.

Early reports he will miss at least a few weeks - was somehow able to play on for 15 mins after this. Another blow for Panthers halves. pic.twitter.com/uXukjmvdCk

'He sort of did it sprinting on a kick and diving....'He [then] felt it straight away so he knew, that would suggest it's decent.'

In the earlier NSW Cup clash with the Bulldogs, Schneider - who was recruited by the club in the off-season as a back up for Cleary -   injured his knee following an ugly charge down attempt.

Cleary spoke for many Panthers fans when he lamented 'we've lost two in one night.'

Scans will determine the severity of Cleary's hamstring complaint - and his coach is bracing himself for bad news.

He also wouldn't rule out sending the playmaker abroad to work with US based rehab expert Bill Knowles.

'It's a concern yes, but I'm not qualified to make certain [medical] judgements,' Cleary said.

'We will treat it on its merits and go from there.'
