Dramatic moment have-a-go hero customer tries to stop two 'shoplifters' stealing champagne from Sainsbury's

A hero shopper fended off two suspected crooks who allegedly stole champagne from a Sainsbury's in south London.

One of the men - in a cap and facemask - had a bottle of bubbly stuffed in his jacket while the other was clutching two bottles in his hands and a green bag over his shoulder.

The Met Police are now investigating the incident, with the support of the supermarket, but no arrests have been made at this stage.

The brave customer put up a fight to try and prevent the alleged thieves from leaving with the posh booze.

A shopping display of confectionery was knocked over in the melee.

The altercation took place at the Sainsbury's on Stanley Park Road, Carshalton, near Croydon

The hero bystander - thought to be wearing a blue Chelsea football kit - screamed at one of the men: 'Put it back. Put it back now. Put it back.'

He then addressed both of them and said: 'Go on, I'll do you both. Put it back. Go on, put it back you thieving c****.'

One of the men replied: 'It's got nothing to do with you. We are homeless.'

But the angry shopper continued: 'Go on I don't give a f***. Put it back, put it back you f***ing c***, I don't give a f***.'

One of the men replied: 'We ain't got nowhere to live.'

A woman - also shopping at the store in Stanley Park Road, Carshalton, near Croydon, south London on Tuesday evening - went up to him and said: 'Just let them go.'

The man replied, 'Thieving c****,' as the pair walked out of the supermarket.

When the confronting customer screamed at the pair to 'put it back', one replied saying that they were homeless

Another shopper filmed just over 30 seconds of the ugly clash on their mobile phone, as reported on NeedToKnow.

A Met Police spokesperson said: 'On Tuesday, 4 June, police were called at around 4pm to a retail premises on Stanley Park Road, Carshalton following reports of shoplifting.

'Officers are currently investigating the circumstances, at this early stage there have been no arrests.'

A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: 'We're supporting with their investigation.'
