A Durham nightclub dubbed 'the worst in Europe' has closed down after more than 40 years of operation- as Dominic Cummings who used to work there paid tribute.

Klute, known for its sticky dancefloors, cheesy tunes and packed atmosphere, reportedly shut its doors for the final time on April 20.

The nightclub was previously branded the 'second worst in Europe' by FHM Magazine but claimed the top spot by default after the worst one burnt down.

Cummings, Boris Johnson's former advisor, paid tribute to Klute today - where he once worked collecting money on the door.

He posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: 'Farewell Klute, the best nightclub outside Moscow, after working there dealing with SW1 felt like easy mode.

'Few know my dad and uncles named it after watching the classic 70s film, watch it if you never have (Maybe The Startup Party should buy the building for our northern HQ...).'

Klute was previously owned by Cummings's uncle but its ownership was taken over by Tokyo Industries in 2013.

Although the company has not posted a formal closure notice, no posts have been made on Klute's social media since March and the club has only been open on weekends since January.

Klute opened its doors for the first time in 1971 and became famous for its popular club night 'Sunday Night Klute' and signature 'quaddie' drink.

Dillon Blevins, Klute's general manager, confirmed the nightclub's closure to Durham's student paper, The Palatinate

He told the publication: 'As a former student of Durham University from 2017, I experienced Klute in its element firsthand.

'At no point was Klute the worst nightclub in Europe: Klute wasn't even the worst nightclub in Durham.

'From what I have seen from the frontline of the Durham night out, I believe that while Klute's closure isn't solely due to changing student [club] preferences, it's clear that the way we spend our leisure time and our money has completely shifted.'

Current and former Durham University students also reacted with shock to the news of Klute's closure.

Onward think tank director Sebastian Payne said he was devastated that future students of the university would not be able to get the 'Klute experience'.

He told the Mirror: 'Klute was a quintessential part of every Durham student's experience, for better and worse.

'It's everything people said: small, sweaty, stinky, chocked full of cheesy music and annoying people.

'It was also terrific fun and unlike any other nightclub - not least by ending every single evening with the exact same combo of Summer of '69 and That's Amore.'

Annie Collier, a student at Durham, who also worked at the nightclub, added: '[The staff] all got on really well and it was such a fun experience working there, which makes it quite sad that it's all gone, as well as the great nights that were spent there when we weren't working too.'
