AFL identity Eddie McGuire has torched Jeremy Finlayson after the suspended Port Adelaide star fired up about his ban for uttering a highly offensive on-field insult.

Finlayson, 28, is currently sidelined for three games following a homophobic slur he directed at an Essendon player earlier this month during Gather Round - but the key forward caused uproar this week after admitting on his wife's Sh!t Talkers podcast he was 'pissed off' about the ban.

He later clarified his comments, stating he 'should have provided more context' - but former Collingwood president McGuire believes the embattled star should be issued another sanction by the AFL.

'In this case, it wouldn't be beyond the pale of the AFL to go 'in you come again, there's an extra two week suspension',' McGuire fumed.

'You are not listening. You are not getting it. You did not realise how this put everybody in the industry and the whole of the AFL under the cosh, including [Port Adelaide] president David Koch

'Keep it to yourself.'

On his wife's podcast this week, Finlayson stated he was 'pissed off' he got a three-week suspension

The furore again kicked-off when Finlayson addressed his sanction on wife Kellie's podcast, which was released on Tuesday.

In a segment dubbed 'good, bad and offensive' talking points for the week, Finlayson said: 'My 'offensive' is it pissed me off that I got a three-week suspension.

'That's it. That's tipped me over the edge. That's about it. We'll leave it there and (at) that and move on.'

The content soon went viral on social media, with Finlayson attracting more unwanted headlines.

'I said '(It) pissed me off that I got a three-week suspension, that's it, that's tipped me over the edge. We'll leave it there and (at) that',' Finlayson said in a club statement on Wednesday.

'When re-thinking my comments, it's clear that I should have provided more context. On reflection, I should have explained that I was bitterly disappointed that I said what I did during the game.

'And I am bitterly disappointed that I put myself and the club in the position I did.

'That is what I am most upset with.

'What I said on the field that night was totally unacceptable. I knew that at the time and I know it now.  'I stress, I have no issue with the sanction at all.'

Kellie Finlayson was just 25 when she received the shocking news that she had terminal cancer, but has been battling the disease and hopes to recover to raise her young daughter

Kellie Finlayson is battling stage four terminal bowel cancer and Finlayson spoke about the ongoing stress of that diagnosis on the family on his wife's podcast.

'Looking back, I should have reached out more,' he said.

'As a man, most men try to put a brave face on, saying 'I'll be right' … that's when things actually overtake a human and get the worst of them.

'It wasn't then and there for me, it was after 18 months or so of dealing with it, it took its toll.'

As part of Finlayson's sanction, he is required to attend a Pride In Sport training program that he must pay for himself.

Finlayson will return for the derby showdown against the Adelaide Crows in round eight.
