England opened up a commanding 207-run lead over West Indies to take charge of the second Test on day three at Trent Bridge.
Harry Brook reached a superb half century in an unbroken partnership with Joe Root to settle the hosts after the quickfire dismissals of Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett.
Firmly in the box seat, England closed on 248-3 at stumps.
But despite ending the day on top, they conspired to lose the lead in a chaotic morning session when Joshua da Silva and Shamar Joseph added 71 for the last West Indies wicket after the tourists were being reduced to 386-9.
When both eventually fell, West Indies had reached 457.
The deficit of 41 was wiped out, however, after Duckett's 76 and Pope's 51. Later, Brook moved to 71* and Root 37* to leave England the favourites.
