Erik ten Hag is staying at Man United but with 'one major change' as Dutchman agrees to take a 'back seat' in one area of management

Erik ten Hag will be remaining in charge of Man United but reportedly with one major change.

United have decided Ten Hag will stay after conducting a performance review following what was a turbulent season.

United have spent the past fortnight examining the 2023-24 campaign and overall first-team operation, leading questions to mount over Ten Hag’s position.

Journalist Pete Hall claims the club and Ten Hag are 'very much aligned' and now negotiations over a contract extension have begun with his current deal is due to expire next summer.

Hall posted on X that there will be one key difference going forward with Ten Hag agreeing to 'take a back seat when it comes to recruitment'. 

Ten Hag has been criticised for a number of signings, most notably the £86m purchase of Antony from his former club Ajax.

The spending of £70m on a 30-year-old Casemiro has also been questioned, as have the likes of Sofyan Amrabat, Mason Mount and Andre Onana.

The report added that the 'the manner of victory over City played a huge part in Ten Hag getting more time.

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe was reported to have held talks with former Bayern Munich and Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel in France last week as speculation mounted over Ten Hag’s future.

The former Ajax boss had come under increasing pressure as United slipped to 14 Premier League defeats last season, with their poor domestic form mirrored in the Champions League.

United’s eighth-placed top-flight finish was their lowest of the Premier League era and they finished with a negative goal difference for the first time.
