Former Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin is close to joining up with Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce on a season loan with no buy option from Al Ahli.

Paperwork is expected to be sorted over the next 24 hours.

The winger joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli last summer in a £30million move from Newcastle.

Saint-Maximin signed a three-year deal with the Saudi Pro League side.

The Frenchman played 31 times in all competitions last summer, scoring four goals and providing 10 assists.

Mourinho is tasked with returning the Turkish Super Lig title to Fenerbahce for the first time since 2013-14 on the back of a heart-breaking title race.

The Istanbul club garnered 99 points, winning 31 and only losing one of 38 league games, but lost out to bitter rivals Galatasaray.

They had even beaten Galatasaray 1-0 in their penultimate match and won 6-0 on the final day against Istanbulspor, but their efforts were in vain.

Mourinho attracted tens of thousands of fans to his unveiling at Fenerbahce's Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in June.

Having been sacked by Roma in January, the Portuguese boss received a hearty welcome and delivered an impassioned address.

Holding up a Fenerbahce shirt, he declared: 'This shirt is now my skin. Your dreams are now my dreams.'

The former Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham boss has made quick work of bolstering his side ahead of the new season.

Already Fenerbahce have signed former Leicester defender Caglar Soyuncu, AC Milan midfielder Rade Krunic, and Turkish full-back Levent Mercan.
